I disagree. I think Cassel/Croyle/Gutierrez are our Qb's and Thigpen is gone. Pioli will get what he can for him.

easy look at where he's playing. 4th quarter in preseason games, his performance is mostly irrelevant. He also got cut by NE for andrew walters. Most of the evaluation is in camp and if he hasn't stood out enough to make more of a statement than the 4 QTR camp arm by game three he's not going to now. Unless they see major potential...and you have to believe someone cut by NE isn't going to have major potential, then there is absolutely no way he is kept on the team. Not in light of two QBs the team prefers more and the fact that they wouldn't trade thigpen for a 5th says the team prefers him. Dude is gone almost no matter what he does, unless he has an amazing last week of camp.

Up until tonight's game, I was thinking Haley would go with Cassel, Croyle, and Thigpen, and cut Gutierrez and then put him on the PS. However, after tonight, he might keep Gutierrez and not risk cutting him. Even on the PS, another team can sign a player away from you.

Despite looking craptacular tonight, Thigpen still has trade value if the Chiefs are interested. He started last season, and that's always valuable to another team. And there are teams with pretty crappy QB situations, especially in the backups. I would think, even after tonight, Pioli could get a 5th. Maybe even a 4th, who knows.

I think both Lelie and Engram make the roster. They have veteran experience, and Lelie also has untapped potential. If Darling is out for any length of time, it's almost a moot point.

The WRs aren't as good, the O-line not as good, the RBs not as good... A QB still has to have fundamentals, drop back, make his reads, make a good pass, etc.,.

From what I understand, the Pats had a hard on for Walter for a while now, liking him in the draft. Belichick may have just decided it was time to have a backup who'd actually taken some NFL snaps in real games... even if it was someone with abysmal stats. (After all, he WAS playing for Oakland, which has to be taken into account.)
