They have the 4th highest run differential in the AL and the 6th/7th highest in the MLB. They have the 4th best record in the AL and the 7th best in the ML. They're 5th in the entire ML in runs scored and 11th in runs allowed. They are 25-14 at home and 15-16 on the road.

So how the **** is this team not a contender?

You can't even compare the two situations.

I’m sorry guys. This happens every time I pay for Bally’s sports app. The good news is my subscription expires soon. I fully expect us to start winning again shortly after the Fourth of July. Until then, my bad.

Your bad stretch should come against good teams, but when you're playing with no life against losing teams and your bullpen is crap and there is no help in sight then yes the team is falling apart.

BWillie 06-23-2024 07:56 AM

This is just not surprising to me. This team was obviously overachieving. Their hitting with RISP in scoring position and starting pitching was never going to be replicated. This is still a great season for them and this regression was always coming. Which is why simply pointing this out earlier in the season and then being shit on about it was so annoying.

This is beyond a "bad stretch."

2003 vibes

GabyKeepsMeWarm 06-23-2024 07:55 PM

Past 2/3 weeks have mostly sucked. Frustrating to say the least. But I don’t think we’re doomed. However, I do think the time to get some relievers was in early May. We don’t have a lot to make a deal, and every team out there looking to trade has all the leverage and is gonna put us over the barrel.

We’re ice cold right now, but I still think this team is capable of going on another run or two. Our starting pitching is still solid, and Ragans/Lugo are both capable of ending losing streaks, so we have that. Just need to stop giving up all these goddamn home runs. Defense needs to tighten back up and our offense needs to get going again. I have zero faith in this bullpen, but even those jokers could get lucky for a few weeks.

Texas always seems to have our number, so I’m really not surprised by this weekend’s outcome. Let’s get home, and do some damage against the Marlins and Cleveland. Cmon gang, it’s baseball! Things get weird, and as bad of stretch this has been, we’re still over .500, in contention for a playoff spot and we have one of the most dynamic players in the game. It ain’t over! LFG!!!!

Why Not? 06-23-2024 08:41 PM

Royals are probably not as bad as they’ve played the last few weeks. And they probably aren’t as good as they were playing during April and May. They are probably closer to a .500 team. Which is fine. If they play at a .500 clip until the last few weeks of the season, they will have an opportunity to get hot and nab a WC spot.

Nah this team is way different than 2003. That 03 rotation was held together by duct tape. Go back and look at the stats, it'll blow your mind. Chris George finished second in wins and starts and he had a 7 ERA. This team has 5 legit MLB level starters. That'll keep them competitive if they can get anything out of the bullpen.

One of my favorite silly moments in Royals lore was Ken Harvey getting stuck behind the first base tarp. Appropriately, in June of 2003:

Harvey had a knack for those moments. The following summer, he briefly appeared to be killed by a toss from right fielder Matt Stairs:

Yes. Seems there is no surviving video footage of that one sadly. That douchebag lived in Olathe and kept up the Fieri look for years. Would see him in public and you could tell he was just itching for somebody to confuse him as the actual Guy. He eventually got into some kind of legal trouble, DV possibly, but don't recall.

Guy Fieri imposter interviewed during Royals telecast
The real Guy Fieri.
Randall Benton | The Sacramento Bee
The real Guy Fieri.

Not to take away from Zack Greinke’s masterful shutout, but a Guy Fieri imposter was interviewed on-air last night during Fox Sports Net’s broadcast of the Royals game.

Guy Fieri, for those who don’t know, is the Food Network host of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." He travels the country visiting these places. He has been to Kansas City before.

A call to PR person Rebecca Brooks confirmed it: It wasn’t Guy!

The imposter gave interviewer Joel Goldberg’s questions short, rude, one-word answers. He was acting like he wanted no part of the interview. He took a phone call during the interview. It was no doubt from his buddy Cletus, who said something like “hey, Buford, I see you on TV!”

My wife’s first reaction was “he looks awful!” It sounded nothing like Fieri. I have seen Fieri in the crowd at various sporting events before, though.

I was determined to never watch his show again, but at least it wasn’t really him. If you know who it was, shoot me an email.

I've always considered the real Fieri to be something of an imposter too, though. Until he visits Columbia's Broadway Diner and orders a "Stretch," I don't consider his show to be legit.

Offense has to get going again. Hopefully Massey can give them a little boost.

It stinks if he can't play 2B, though. They really need his bat but things get crowded if all he can do is DH.

Massey activated, Frazier to the IL. Velazquez demoted and CJ Alexander called up. Alexander has had a pretty good year in AAA with a 900 OPS, so he certainly deserves a shot over the guys we have been trotting out there all season. Some moves had to be made and hopefully more happen at some point.

Couple of lowlights from the dark times...

Chip Ambres and Terrence Long both thinking the other was gonna grab an inning ending pop fly, both decide to run to the dugout as the ball lands behind them... Think that was 2005?

And I think from the same year, Kerry Robinson climbing the wall as the ball lands ten feet in front it. Good times.

2003 was a great summer for baseball. That team was pretty exciting. They faded into oblivion, yes. But it was a pretty good season for 3 months.

Ow 2004 was a horrible season. Sitting there on Opening day they were down 7-2 in the 9th and scored 6 to win. I think it was on a Mendy Lopez HR.

Then it all fell apart.

I think I'm sold on trying to trade for Jazz Chisholm.

It's not just a buy for this season - this is a buy for this season and the next two beyond it.

Trade cost is generally viewed as one top 100 prospect and another prospect in a team's top 10 prospects, though the top 100 prospects I've seen connected in trade scenarios for him are NOT higher than the top 40.

It helps them a lot this year (and you can hit Chisholm 1, 2, or 3) and gives them a couple of just dynamic pieces to build around.

One of Blake Mitchell, Gavin Cross, or Frank Mozzicato would likely need to be the lead piece, but I'm OK with that idea.

Centerfield isn't really a place we have anyone up and coming either.

The thing about him is that if you have him for 3 seasons thats really 1 whole season since he is arguably the most injury prone player in baseball. At least Trout is older now as an excuse for him. I don't see how a guy who has never come even remotely close to playing a whole season is worth any major prospects, to say nothing of his hype coming entirely from one season where he played great for 60 games and hasn't finished within basically 100 points in OPS since. I don't see how you can build around a career 249 hitter with a 750 OPS and has never hit 20 home runs in a single season because he can't stay healthy.

I'm fine with going after him but I just don't think he's worth a ton, nor could he ever be confidently slotted in as a center piece due to his injury history.

I would be very happy with trading Frank Mozzicato as part of the deal. He is absolute crap.

duncan_idaho 06-26-2024 09:17 PM

Chisholm's injury history is the only reason he's available at that price. Playing the OF full time seems to have helped him a bit.

There's some risk for KC but the upside is pretty high.

And yeah, Mozzicato is the guy I'm trying to sell on now that he has put up some decent numbers. (walks are still too high, Ks aren't high enough to pair with it).

I like those sections behind or near home plate in the upper deck at Kauffman. Great view, and not many seats packed into the rows. Easy access.

Don't look now, but Kyle Isbel has been hot hot hot and over his last 30 games he has a .772 OPS. That's damn good especially when paired with his stellar D. Over his last 15 games he has a .326 BA and .975 OPS. If he can keep his OPS at .700 or above, then he is a real asset and I will apologize for hating him.

If you watched the NCAA postseason, college coaches have no problem riding their ace past 110 pitches.

And then after they get drafted, they'll go back to throwing 80 pitches in the minors.

Some do, but take Vanderbilt's Tim Corbin for example. He's so well respected he will provide analysis during MLB Network's First-Year Player Draft coverage.

But a few years ago, Corbin had Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter throw 115 pitches on consecutive days early in the season. I thought that was unnecessary. Both are now going through hard times. Leiter can't find the plate and Rocker can't stay healthy.
