Alex Smith showed me basically exactly what I expected yesterday. He was fine. He didn't make any huge mistakes. He checked down a lot. He showed good short-area accuracy.
He was OK working from a mostly clean pocket and made some nice, short throws. His defense set him up with short fields multiple times, and the O took advantage.
It wasn't an "Oh wow" performance, but it's one that I suspect will be far more normal for Smith as a Chief than an actual "Oh wow" performance.
I didn't see any of the Jets game, but from what I heard yesterday from analysts, what I read, and what I can glean from highlights, it was a performance that highlighted some of his strengths and also some of his weaknesses.
He still has a ways to go in terms of development and being ready to be an NFL starter (see his rough start). But he also has a lot of physical ability and is an accurate passer, as we saw from his final passing numbers.
I'm sure the anti-Geno crowd was licking its chops after his early fumble and INT. The way he played the rest of the game/finished the rest of the game is something that he shouldn't be able to do, if all the criticisms of his character (he's a whiner/pouter/blames his teammates/gives up) were true.
