I missed the Deer part...

Get a .308 or a .270

I'm needing something to eradicate varmints when I'm In the field. I am absolutely done with varmints and the need to GTFO. I'm looking at deer coyotes mostly and badgers if I can find them.

I'm not too terrible experienced, but I'm a pretty fair shot considering the number of rounds I've been through.

I usually get within 100-150 feet before they bolt depending on what I'm doing, sometimes much closer, 30-50. Not sure what I need, but it needs to be fairly compact to fit in the cab.

Any ideas?

16" Bull Barrel Ar-15 or a normal 16" AR.

I've had an itch lately to get a hold of a Colt Python, but Jesus they're expensive. Any recommendations for something similar?

I usually pick one or two weapons a night from the safe to be beside my bed (tonite it's the 21sf & the pump 12) I never show off my weapons(except to people online who don't know me) so it does not have to be some kinda special edition anything, I just want a good basic reliable AR15.

I've seen DPMS Panther Sporticals for around $600. I've never shot one so I can't give you a review.

Savage Axis .223. Around 300 bucks so you don't mind beating it to shit.
Mini-14 semi-auto .223. Nice and compact.
I used to carry a Remington 700 .270 and loved it.

I didn't remember the exact price. That's why I said "around $600".

I'd spend the extra $13 just to stay out of Wal-Mart.

My AR is (or at least started out as) a DPMS Panther Oracle, which is pretty much the same thing. Very good entry level guns. One of the FFL guys I use is a retired cop, told me that lots of cops buy them as personal weapons.

I would like to suggest a 243 It can shoot loads made for varmint's & heavier loads for deer & both types of ammo are easy to find. 243 is a laser beam & very very accurate round. Rem Mohawk 600 in 243. Nice small walking rifle. 700 to 800 bucks
If you are looking for something on the cheap to dispatch fur & you could careless what kind of hole you blow this fur into. Tula made SKS is the gun for you.

Will a 5.56 kiill a deer/ yes
Will a game-warden or sheriff be unhappy seeing you shoot Bambi with a Ar-15?
In most states YES!

A Salt Weapon 10-10-2012 09:10 PM

I hunt deer with an AR-15. Bear with an AR-10(well technically a LR-308 but the same thing really) works fine. Can't go wrong with a .270 though.

As to the AR questions, Stag is a good deal (get the plus package for an extra $100) however buying a lower and upper separately will save you some coin and let you get exactly what you want(or close to it)
Personally I'd stay away from RockRiver arms, Olympic, or Dpms as there is better value out there. Bushmaster has gone downhillsince being sold to Dpms, however Windham weaponry is the old Bushmaster and gives excellent value. You also can't go wrong with colt or armalite, however I steer away from them due to their political stance and anti-2nd amendment actions.
The main thing with AR's is that parts are interchangeable and easily modified, (read: expensive hobby)

Not sure why anyone would even consider a mini-14 these days as the AR platform surpasses them in every category including price.

The gal across the street has a 9mm Glock that looks like new and it has a case with two clips. Her husband pass away a year ago and she's selling stuff off. What's a fair offer?

Kyle DeLexus 10-10-2012 09:27 PM

All this AR talk has me thinking about getting into it. It will probably be a few months, is there a good site or something where I can read up on the AR platform and figure out what I'd want?
