Additionally, nobody would dispute that Ellis is the best offensive player on the team. He is quite clearly (especially if Selden's percentages continue to plummet). It's Perry's non-existent defense that holds him back. Mason is a good defender having a bad week, there's a bit of a difference there.

Confernce win shares

2014
Ellis: 2.5
Mason: 0.6

2015
Ellis: 2.3
Mason: 2.2

Frank Mason isn't good enough to to even have a debate over.

You do realize you're just proving my point about sample size here, right? Based on just last season when Mason was good in conference play (2.2 WS), these six poor games are hardly anything to go on.

Mason was also a backup guard and role player as a freshman behind Tharpe in 2014, so I'm not sure why that year would be brought up at all unless you weren't aware of that.

He didn't intend it, but the troll actually has a point here. It doesn't really matter who the best player on the team is. You can make an argument for Mason (if you think these last four games aren't indicative of his actual level, which I do), Ellis (if you ignore his putrid, non-existent defense), or even Selden (if you think the guy from November/December will return soon). The real problem is that they are all flawed in one way or another. They are not anywhere close to the kind of elite players that you usually see leading top NCAA teams. That isn't a death knell for KU, but it makes it much harder for them. There just isn't that one guy you can rely on to produce on both ends consistently.

He really shined on defense against Hield holding him to only 46 points, by the way.

If you ignore his 35% shooting from the field, lousy assist to turnover ratio, and the 46 points he gave up to Hield, Mason might be the best player on the team.

Not that he was guarding him for the entire time, but he actually did (I know you only bother to come in here to troll when KU is struggling, but here's the link from a week or so back explaining that):

You don’t need another person telling you how amazing Monday’s Kansas-Oklahoma, three-overtime epic was. Its status as the Game of the Season (to date) was sealed before the final buzzer. In my film review I focused on my favorite postgame quote, from Jayhawks coach Bill Self, in regards to their defense on Sooner star Buddy Hield: “We actually did a really good job holding him to 46 [points].”

In almost any context but this one, it’s a ridiculous quote, but in the context of this ridiculous game, it’s not. Hield probably could’ve scored 60 if not for all the ball-denial work by Frank Mason III (and early in the game, Wayne Selden).

For every possession Hield was on the floor, I charted who guarded him and the outcome. In the chart below, PPP is Hield’s points per possession on all the possessions he was guarded, not just the ones he attempted a shot or committed a turnover; the next column is the percentage of time he took a shot or drew a shooting foul; the final column is the percentage of time he committed a turnover. In regulation, Mason did the bulk of the work, and did it quite well, but it was Selden’s stretch of guarding Hield to open the game that was exceptional:

So ignore the fact that he's had the most win shares on the team for two years in a row and ignore the fact that he's had a better BPM than Perry Ellis again (because he, unlike Perry, actually plays defense). Let's just focus instead on the fact that he's had a bad few conference games and couldn't stop the best player in the country from getting his (well, you know, until he forced 2 straight turnovers off him to win the game in 3OT). LMAO

So, as it turns out, Michigan State isn't actually good. We might not be as good as we thought we were. They got beat by NEBRASKA today. Meanwhile, after some early season horrible play, UNC seems to be rounding to form and is thumping Wake. Texas up 5 on WVU with 10 minutes left in 2nd half IN Morgantown.

Prison Bitch 01-20-2016 07:38 PM

Mich State just lost again. To Corn at home, 72-71. (They've lost 3 straight, and 3 straight to Corn). Wil Shields' son Shevon - the tall dude below - hit them for 28.

The Baylor crowd is making the Kansas/Oklahoma State game look like Woodstock.

Michigan State is in trouble. No consistent scoring outside of Valentine.

Saul Good 01-20-2016 07:45 PM

There are no great teams this year. I've seen all the contenders play multiple games. Maryland is the best I've seen.
