I just don't see how he can be viewed as a legit franchise qb.

It just beffuddles me.

I honestly don't think Pioli is tied to anyone. Just because he hand picked someone doesn't mean he's tied to them. He hand picked Haley, and then fired him.

Getting Cassel was a terrible decision, but I haven't seen anything that suggests that Pioli is tied to him. Yeah he hasn't drafted a franchise QB, but then again, who in the past 3 drafts has he missed out on?

Cassel is Pioli's ego plain and simple. It was his scouting, his draft pick, his trade, and his big signing. Its Pioli thinking he is smarter than everybody else.

Clark actually listens to fan complaints (if you can believe that). He knows that this fan base is spent with Cassel. However, Pioli will continue to beat that drum.

In the end, Pioli wins. Clark doesn't wear any pants in the relationship.

I think we will resign Orton to compete with Cassel

O.city 01-06-2012 09:18 PM

My hope is Cassel was a stop gap guy. Pioli knew he could be a leader and help lead thru the transition.

This is the year he gets the guy to steer the ship.

FringeNC 01-06-2012 09:18 PM

It seems pretty simple -- you let Pioli hire McDaniels and keep Cassel....and then you hold him responsible for the outcome. This no one in charge bullshit is the worst.

O.city 01-06-2012 09:19 PM

I don't think Pioli wants competition for Cassel.

He won't beat out Orton.

No, Cassel was not the stop gap. Pioli brought him in thinking that he was a franchise QB.

After seeing Tom Brady day in day out I just refuse to beleive this. There is no way someone can think Matt Cassel is a franchise quarterback. He didnt' play in HIgh school, didn'n't play in college, barely played in the NFL.

It's pathetic.

You really don't think Pioli is firmly in Cassel's corner?

The guy has done nothing to provide competition for the guy in 3 years. Nothing. No dependable backup. It was Cassel's team sink or swim with no safety net.

Pioli gave the guy 63 million without him taking one snap as a member of the Chiefs.

Firing a head coach that makes about 2.5 million a year is far different than getting rid of the mistake that has already provided a sunk cost of 28 million and a 2nd round pick.

A lot of people thought he was good after 2008. Shit, some of the people on Patriots boards were willing to trade Tom Brady just so Cassel could be kept.

JFC! If there is a QB competition between 2 QB's that have 60 career starts... give or take a few for each one... then every single coach and talent evaluator for the team should be fired asap. If there is a QB competition, it damn well better be between Orton and Stanzi/1st round draft pick, or Cassel and Stanzi/1st round draft pick.

He played in high school, he was one of the top ranked qbs in the nation.

O.city 01-06-2012 09:28 PM

Oh pardon me. I just remember seeign that he had to play special teams and tight end to see the field at USC.

O.city 01-06-2012 09:29 PM

In the end the only question that should be asked is "Can Matt Cassel win a superbowl?"

If not then whats the point? Isn't that the ultimate goal?
