Agreed. Similarly, Cal's style of freshmen recruiting isn't working anymore either.

College basketball success today is about bringing in high level transfers in and coaching them up into your system immediately. Self hasn't adjusted yet to that reality and he may never do it.

He’s won his titles. He’s made his money.

Would you blame him for not wanting to reinvent himself at his age with his recent health issues?

I don’t. If he’s checked out or too stubborn to change, I just hope he voluntarily moves on before it gets real ugly with the fan base.

I think we’re watching the downfall of Self. He’s cooked.

Dud? I would hate to defend a KU player and go against my alleged reputation, but this is just such a lazy take. Dickinson literally was the only player to show up today (20 points on 8/15 shooting). He's averaged a 17 point double-double in his two years at KU. He's consistently played great for this program.

Have you considered his teammates (two of which are 4+ year seniors) who can't shoot/score around him might be more of the issue than a guy who is a top 5 statistical player in the NCAA?

It seems to me that Self has lost a lot of intensity since the heart issue.

I admittedly don’t watch all of your games, but that’s what it seems like as an outside obeserver. Don’t seem him get fired up with the refs and with the team as much anymore.

Do you all agree with that?

I can’t help but think that has to be having something to do with the downturn in performance. Wonder if he’s about at the end?

We don't know what he's like in practice, but he's changed significantly on-court since the heart issue for sure.

I'd say the bigger issue for this team, though, is him not playing our best players for no real reason at all.

On/Off offensive stats for KU in Big 12 play

• Flory Bidunga + 24.5 pts per 100 possessions.

• KJ Adams -18.8 pts per 100 possessions.

• Dajuan -7.9 pts per 100 possessions.

Bidunga played 15 minutes? LMAO C'mon man.

But there's something broken here and (insert coach name here) is either unable or unwilling to fix it.

Man, that sounds familiar...

Unlike Calipari, I still hold out at least some hope that Self will do what he has to do to win games when it really matters though.

There's no way he doesn't know Flory isn't the better player by now. He's just being stubborn as **** about it.

I don't think he has changed, I just think the things that he valued don't really work in the modern game. He wants to run on "trust" and experience and play through the center and defense first over everything. Self has never been one to trust freshman unless he has to, and every transfer, regardless of age, is a freshman in his mind. So you get bizarre things like Griffen playing 25 minutes one game then 7 the next, Moore starts but plays the fewest minutes of any regular, Storr scores 20 PPG on a tournament team yet can't find minutes on a team that scored like 120 points in 2 games combined and of course Flory will never be better than "his guy". He has to adjust and accept guys who don't fit his exact system and he, so far, hasn't. Maybe getting rid of all of "his guys" next year will force him to do that.

Is it? They were a preseason #1 for a reason. They're also still top 10 in KenPom/other analytic rankings despite being a complete mess in the clutch with a coach absolutely determined to play a bad player over his NBA big for reasons nobody can comprehend.

To be clear, I'm not optimistic about how this will end. But I do think they've got a lot of talent assembled here that Self apparently can't figure out how to fit together.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. He sort of did the same with Remy too before he won a championship for us (despite Remy being one of the best players in NCAA coming from ASU). He just doesn't trust these guys and it's killing this team right now.

“He wore us out the second half,” Self said of Wright. “We had no answer for him.”

Self gave this quote after the game after benching his shot blocking center who will be drafted in 5 months for almost the entire 2nd half for KJ Adams. I feel like talent ain’t the issue.
