Coming from an unabashed nerd who was raised on TNG and grew to like DS9 on my own, the Abrams reboot was needed because it stepped away from the 40 years of "canon" backstory and focused on the relationships between it's main characters, which as much as it might not fit exactly with what TOS did, in essence it mimicked half of what made the original series good in the Kirk/Spock/McCoy dynamic.
Yes, it's hard to copy what made TOS good considering it was the heyday of good SciFi in that it made you think and question things, but if you ignore that aspect and feel that StarTrek is fundamentally about "fun" and "adventures" then the newest movie did just that.
At least that's how I feel.
