Hawkeye was also a character in James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans". I'm not sure if he was the source of the nickname.
Iowa was nicknamed the "Hawkeye State" originally as a tribute to an Indian named Chief Black Hawk. |

Seriously, if you want to poke fun at mascots, there are much easier targets than IA. Cobbers (Concordia College, Moorhead) Duhawks (Loras College) Ephs (Williams College) Flying Fleet (Erskine College) Gaels (Iona College) Ichabods (Washburn University of Topeka) Jumbos (Tufts University) Lord Jeffs (Amherst College) Nanooks (University of Alaska Fairbanks) Oaks (Menlo College) Utes (University of Utah) Valiants (Manhattanville College) Wonder Boys (Arkansas Tech University) Yeomen (Oberlin College) Zips (University of Akron) |
Hey, don't forget the University of Kansas "Let's ride across the border and massacre a bunch of Missurians" ... ahem, I mean Jayhawks :)

It's pretty much guaranteed that it will be the Cap One Bowl...
The opponent now really depends on the outcome of the SEC championship game...if Auburn wins, Iowa will likely play LSU. |
