4.9 yards rushing without a huge run is pretty damn high.

RedThat 11-06-2005 08:30 PM

I think the defense played ok. Not good, outstanding, or great. They played ok enough to win. Im a harsh critic mind you. I think we did get lucky on some plays. Kerry Collins absolutely stinks under pressure, he made some terrible throws. Even when guys were chasing him but werent close to hitting him, Collins still made bad throws. He gets scared way too easily, and is not patient enough. Lamont Jordan had some drops in where he could've gained plenty if he caught them. Courtney Anderson and a another one of their receivers dropped some passes.

*All these little things add up, and made our defense look good. But imo, they were average. Im a harsh critic, and I think some are overhyping our D a bit.

I still think our D-Line s*cks a**. No pressure. Id like to see Jared Allen play with the same intensity the way he did against the Skins. He didnt bring that same intensity today. We had to blitz to create pressure and were still late getting there. Thank goodness Collins was impatient. The coverage from our secondary was good. DeWayne Washington was our best player today. Mitchell and Johnson played solid today. I wonder whats up with Mitchell? I hope hes not hurt. Hes growing into a pretty solid linebacker.

What do you think?

Those stats pretty much some it up. Plus we didn't get that many 1st downs on offense. We make the playoffs for sure if the D hold teams under their average...

it helped the the faiders were stupid and elected to run the ball for 3 quarters.

as soon as they starter throwing the ball in the 4th quarter we starting giving it up in the passing game again.

140 yrds out of the Faider's 276 gained in the 4th quarter.

The only thing holding this D back from being truly outstanding....unlikely to change this year, hopefully next year we can draft and add in some stout free agent pass rushers up front.

That's not true, they tried passing throughout the first half but it was either broken up or incomplete due to QB pressure for themost part. It seems like the D either gave up bit after that penalty or they simply got tired from being on the field all day (thanks O).

They had trouble tackling Jordan the whole way, though...

.

Descions like these are why Norv Turner has something like a 55-77 career head coaching record. Dude sucks ass as a head coach...he can be the Raider HC for as long as he wants!

I agree. Id like to see us make a run for John Abraham next year. Honestly, I know he'll be tough to sign, but man, we need a guy like that.

Come a long way with a long way yet to go...

This is still not a good Defense and it will not be a good Defense until we can get pressure on the pencil neck with our front four. That is not going to happen this year.

However, the D played well yesterday. They held Jordan under 100 yards and did not give up the long gainers. 2nd & 3RD tier players stepped up. It is a sports cliché, but it is true. Washington and Sapp did a good job. They rose above themselves and filled the huge shoes of Surtain. I expected the Raiders to pass up and down the field, but the Chiefs secondary held them down. We had to blitz to do it, but we forced Collins to throw before he was ready several times.

This Defense is still a work in progress, but I see steady improvement week by week. They have overcome the disappearance of the Offense on several occasions, fighting a delaying action against The Enemy until our Offense wakes up and joins the battle.

Big props to the D.

Trying to be patient.

I thought the Defense played much better yesterday. We still don't get ENOUGH pressure on the QB. Until we can get MORE PRESSURE on the
opponets QB, our Defense is going to be like a pot stew. We won't know for sure what were going to get.

Coogs 11-07-2005 08:45 AM

I thought the front 7 did an excellent job yesterday at getting pressure in the backfield on both passing (CB's didn't have to cover each play for 10 seconds) and running plays (could have tackled a bit better once we got there on running plays though). Mitchell is becomming a favorite defensive player. I wish Gun would turn DJ loose like the Skins have done with Arrington. We could have two big time playmakers at two LB positions.

All-in-all, if we stay with the power running/play action pass on offense, and play defense in the backfield with the front 7, we just might have the winning combination we need

CupidStunt 11-07-2005 10:07 AM

Those complaining about rush defense..... I assume you must not have watched the TV coverage? Or maybe you just missed the breakdown they gave when we had SIX---yes, 6---guys in the box.

Did it hurt us? Not a damn bit. I'll take those cheap yards against soft fronts if it prevents big plays, all day long.

htismaqe 11-07-2005 10:35 AM

We held Jordan to a long of 11 yards and held him under 100 yards, despite playing nickel and dime all freaking day...

I'll take it. I'm not picky.

ChiTown 11-07-2005 10:38 AM

They started off shaky with a bunch of missed tackles in the first qtr, but came back strong. Other than the last Raider TD penalty meltdown, I thought they did great.

Collins threw the ball 21 times in the first half, 40 in the entire game.

As far as I'm concerned, the defense played very well. The offense isn't carrying their share of the load.
