I don't get up on roofs. I mount them just above the eave or on a pole in the yard. The standard dish is 18" X 20" and doesn't catch much wind. But the HD dish is much bigger and heavier and needs to be on a pole.

My dish is on a 8' pole on top of my chimney and barely clears the tree tops. In fact sometimes the signal on the local chanels is so weak it won't come in, even on a clear day.

Where are you located? Everywhere that got the locals after KC did has the locals on Sat 119 and the regular programming is on Sat 101. The satellites are arranged along an arc in the Clarke Belt. Sat 101 is several degrees higher in the arc than 119 so it is possible to have reception of regular channels but no locals. I'm guessing that, in your case, the trees have gradually grown up in front of 119 but are not yet blocking 101.

I'm in Eastern TN. I didn't get locals when I first got it installed three years ago, because they wouldn't come in. I then bought a TIVO box from a friend. When he brought it over, it was still on his account and he had locals on his account. I could get them all of the sudden. So I signed up for locals. That was last July when the trees were in full bloom. The local signal has been pretty shakey again this spring though. Can't figure out why it would be coming in and out like that.
