Another interesting element of that draft -- the Grizzlies had traded a future first rounder for Otis freaking Thorpe several years earlier when they were in Vancouver (Stu Jackson was the idiotic GM at the time). This was the last season the pick was lottery protected, and it was only protected if the Grizz got the first pick. Well, with GM Jerry West sitting in the studio, the Grizz defied the odds and were left standing with Cleveland for the first pick. The Grizz either get LeBron to launch their franchise in Memphis full steam ahead, or they are left without a lottery pick in the best draft in recent memory. Of course Cleveland got the pick, and the Grizzlies haven't recovered.
