Definitely, and the Royals should continue to do this until 2030 so that we can have a monopoly on first-round talent. This makes our run at the title in 2038 seem very likely.

and if guillen is hurt he should sit out

DeezNutz 08-15-2008 11:55 AM

I heard Hosmer is hurt, which is why he might sit out this draft.

Matt Harrington turned down $4M in 2000 after he was taken as the 7th pick. He was selected a little lower each time in the next four drafts, turning down a little less money each time. He has yet to play affiliated baseball. His agent? Squat Poor-us.

Didn't we do that to some poor bastard straight out of AA a few years ago? He made that start, and was never heard from again, iirc.

Yes. He wasn't anywhere close to a top prospect, too, if I'm remembering correctly. This move got a lot of run on talk radio as "the Royals not even trying."

It was a joke, that's for sure.

Is this going to get said every year now? People were saying the same thing before they signed Moosetacos. They paid him and now they're paying 1st-rounders who slipped into the later rounds, which they never would have done a few years ago. I can't remember the last time they did that at all.

I think things have changed.

No, the Melville pick made this year's draft much different from previous ones. It's like we've seen the slow maturation of a franchise. First step was being willing to draft BPA. Now it's being willing to go outside of slot, well outside of slot, beyond round 1.

The '08 draft, with a signed Hosmer and Melville, will be the first undeniable sign that the team is serious about winning. But Hosmer must get inked to be the case.

The previous efforts are laudable but not nearly enough.

We need a post from Hamas proudly proclaiming that the Royals signing of Meche and Guillen are holding the franchise back and we aren't doing enough in the draft because we don't have any money.

penguinz 08-15-2008 02:43 PM

How many Rd1 picks are signed? As of last night was almost none. It is not just us that is going to go down to the last few minutes.

Yeah, right. I don't know how we had first and fourth-round picks available to make these selections considering how many choices we had to give up b/c of our free-agent activity.

He doesn't have to be inked for that to be the case. What if he's demanding some insane amount of money? What if he's demanding a major league contract right off the bat? Are the Royals not serious about winning if they don't give in to whatever he asks for? Another Boras client is apparently turning down the Yankees, and I'm pretty sure they like winning.

It would be a shame if they don't sign him, but to act like nothing has changed unless they do is just being silly.
