A true wool allergy is extremely rare. More than likely you just have a sensitivity to course fibers.

Wool is pretty good. I got some hiking socks from Cabela's that are crazy warm and keep your feet dry. They are better, but expensive.

If I'm going to be out in the cold for an extended period of time I wear a pair of wool socks, but I always wear a pair of cotton underneath them because they're more comfortable.

They sell moisture wicking thin liner socks to go under the wool.

All i can say is cotton tube socks have always sucked.

Cotton kills.

Also, if you know what smartwool socks you like, Sierra Trading Post usually has good deals:

Can I wear those comfortably with flip-flops?

These wool socks are the only socks I wear for out doors/work boots. Awesome socks that really last and keep your foot warm. Sorry, I do not know how to put the picture of them up.

If you appreciate the natural warmth and long-wearing qualities of wool, then these socks will make an excellent choice for all your outdoor activities. Add a pair of Cabela's liner socks for maximum wicking performance. This is an extra-heavyweight stretch boot sock made of 50% Merino wool/30% wool/10% nylon/9% acrylic/1% lycra® spandex. The Spandex™ supported rib top helps these socks keep their shape and keeps them from sliding down into your boots. Made in USA.
