in all honesty, that was truly my guess, in my head.

I wasn't sure until I looked a couple of pics on the net to compare the markings. I haven't seen one of those kinds of King Snakes since I moved from KC 10 years ago.

In GA. we have a lot of Rat Snakes, Black w/ white markings, they're nasty looking, but like the King, it too'll eat a copperhead which is smaller.

No, we had both riding mowers going. I was out mowing east of our barn which is a good distance away. The wife didn't even know she had hit it until I got back up closer to the house and pointed it out to her.

Did you all try to rescue him, or call the vet? Something needed to be done, if he was still breathing.

I love talking about snakes, though. If you do some research, India has some crazy looking snakes.

When I lived on a farm in Lee's Summit, I would catch rat snakes and king snakes all the time. I never knew that rat snakes would eat Copperheads, though. One time I caught a Copperhead and put him in the same cage with a King Snake that I had to see if it would eat it. The King Snake went after it, but when it got close the Copperhead bit him on the head and the King Snake just cowered away and went back to it's corner.

nerodia? do you live near water?

Mr_Tomahawk 09-27-2009 08:56 PM

Either a Bull Snake or a Northern Pine Snake.

Most likely a Bull Snake being in Iowa.

From the looks of the pic, I was going to say Bull/Corn snake. They can get rather nasty but can't really hurt you unless you run into a tree when you flee from it.

Who knows? I was told that by someone, I'm not sure it's accurate, but, It was black, about five foot, and intimidating looking.
