Only reason I know #1 is because I took film classes. I make no bones about it, I'm a contemporary movie guy. Said it many times before.

Come to think of it, I may have heard #2 but wouldn't have recognized it as I would have The Graduate.

What a pathetic #1.

Huh. Her quote wasn't even the highest from that movie. "Plastics" in at #42.

Why?

irishjayhawk 01-05-2010 09:01 PM

#4 is clearly a better #1 than the actual #1.

MahiMike 01-05-2010 09:02 PM

I dunno. Let me go ask my grandpa.

I would think #23 is better known than #4. Of course, I'm not sure what their criteria was.

I'd even agree with that. Both more well known than #1.

Jurors were asked to consider the following criteria in making their selections:

MOVIE QUOTE
A statement, phrase or brief exchange of dialogue spoken in an American film.* (Lyrics from songs are not eligible.)

CULTURAL IMPACT
Movie Quotes that viewers use in their own lives and situations; circulating through popular culture, they become part of the national lexicon.

LEGACY
Movie Quotes that viewers use to evoke the memory of a treasured film, thus ensuring and enlivening its historical legacy.

I think it depends on your age. Wizard of Oz is known to every generation since it was made. GWTW, though, is pretty dated. I've seen it many times, but probably not in the past 25 years.

I'm not sure if that list is meant to be best known or just "best".

Edit: Thurman Merman has explained.
