I was thinking ferret as well. However, my thoughts on that comes from a sci-fi book from the 70's (The Mote in God's Eye) rather than actual experience.

Poison is really your only choice here. You'll want to find their burrow holes and use secure bait stations so you don't kill off any friendly critters.
