Looks like Kiper nailed it.

So because they weren't in the room means they had no input? That's a pretty steep generalization.

People keep using the excuse that "even Weis didn't want Clausen, so what does that tell you?"

I think you can throw that one out the window.

You'll get people that argue that they talked about prospects before the draft, so they still had input.

Which is MUCH different than being in the room, seeing someone fall that is a huge value pick, and not being able to speak up and say, "Never thought he'd be there, I'd rather have him."

Good timing.

I bet the conversation of IF Clausen fell into the their laps in the second round came up Weis wouldve said go for it.

Pioli cant admit he ****ed up on Cassel is really all it comes down to. Is what it is and now Chiefs fans have to suffer for at least 2 to 3 more years.

Its OK.

Not in there. This is not uncommon. Also, the board is set prior to the draft. Not during the draft. So, they have all their input before the board is even set.

DaWolf 04-26-2010 10:47 AM

They have separate meetings prior to the draft with the coaches to get their thoughts and views on players. If I were running a team I would not want them in the war room. Pioli alluded to this prior to the draft. They want to enter the war room with a solid idea of who they want and where they want them. He said that the coaches and scouts will give their input and fight for the guys they believe in prior to draft day. Once draft day hits, they want to be set with their targets and scenarios, it's going to be too late for a guy to all of a sudden start campaigning for a player after the draft starts. All of that should be done beforehand...

You don't think they prepare for guys falling? Seriously. Do you think that? If nothing else they stack their board so that if there is someone falling, they can TRADE UP and get a player.

Now, the other thing here is, in regards to Clausen and Tate.... Between round 1 and round 2, there was a huge break. Do you think that Weis and Pioli and Crennel didn't chat a little about the draft?

I am sure that Pioli is an egotistical jerk that has to have everything his way... and I am sure that is why Crennel and Weis both came back to work for him despite having other opportunities. That makes so much sense.

So when a scenario they didn't expect is staring them in the face, no one is there to keep Pioli from taking a KR.

How can you say this? I mean, a logical well reasoned explanation? No way, it is because Pioli is an egotistical jerk and doesn't listen to anyone else, nor does he care. I mean, that is why Weis and Crennel came to work for him.

Yep... I am sure that they were totally caught off guard with the talent that was available there.... they were so confused.

Arenas is a good kick returner AND a good corner. Two for one combo.

How do you know they didn't expect that scenario? If mockers were accurately predicting his free fall, why couldn't NFL teams?

You're right though - McCluster is just a KR.

Aren't you the genious (CPS) that was convinced that Ashleigh Lelie was the second coming of Jerry Rice and that DJ was a can't miss All-Pro? Honestly, your draft takes carry very little credibility with me.

At that point it becomes the decision of the HC and GM, not the OC. Weis knew where they had Clausen graded and on their board and priority list. He also would have had an entire evening of post first day draft to give his input. They went into that second day knowing full well that Clausen would likely be there at 2A.

The question is whether Weis looked at it and said "Cassel is not a QB I'm going to be able to do anything with, and Croyle is useless, so let's get Clausen," or "Well, we really need some more explosiveness on offense, and I like this kid McCluster. You get me some offensive tools, and I'll fix your QB issue."

Certainly Weis could have been overruled, but my guess is that in them taking McCluster and moving up to get Moeaki, yet not moving up to get Clausen at 2b, the priority was more along the lines of getting Weis tools to work with on offense rather than another QB...

I think that guess is 100% correct, but only because Pioli told Weis he had to work with Cassel.

At that point, of course Weis is going to want players that will help turn chicken shit into chicken salad.

You must have me confused with someone else.

Here are the four posts connecting me to Ashley Lelie in any way, shape or form. Two of them are responses to someone who mentioned Lelie.

And I wasn't a member of this forum when DJ was drafted, not have I ever pimped him as an All-Pro, to my recollection.

Sorry to disappoint.
