Ok, I got bittorrent, downloaded the torrent, clicked on it and it opened a folder with 2 .MP4 files. I clicked on one, Real Player launches but nothing happens.

WTF am I doing wrong here?

Wait for the 4GB torrent to finish downloading.

Also, don't use real player. Use Media Player Classic. Google it.

If I try to use Quicktime I get an error saying "invalid sample description in file"

Well, I don't have MP Classic. I guess I could always get it. I didn't think Media Player played .MP4 files?

Ok, well it is taking a long time to download so. Anything special I need to do after it is finished? I assume all the files need to be in the same folder?

It's just a video file. You play it in MPC.
