Depends on the breed. For shih tzus, it is becoming common place that the owner of the stud have first pick of the litter, but no monetary compensation.

I personally prefer the temperament of males. The rescue home inspector for my cocker cracked me up discussing the difference in personality. Her line was, they call them bitches for a reason.

I'd get a female if I was looking for a guard dog, thats for sure.

Why do you think this is?

I have a male and female shepherd, and the male took about twice as long to train. Smart as hell and a great dog, but he had a bit more stubborn in him, for some reason.

Males are typically more bull headed and harder to train than females.
