Here is the thing: Over the past three seasons, Memphis has been one of the most appallingly terrible football teams in FBS (and probably would have struggled with top-tier FCS schools tbqh). If Poe had come back for his senior season he would have been under his third coach in four years. He is unquestionably raw, but he was also one of the few things about Memphis football over the past few years that was fun to watch.
Opposing o-lines sold out to keep him from making any impact, and this limited both his numbers and his ability to shine on tape. He still was clearly one of the best players on the field when he played, at least from the 15+ games I saw with him on the team, but it's impossible to know exactly how good he is considering the situation he was coming from.
The story on him before this season was that he was a hard worker and a freakish athlete who would probably leave early and be 2nd-4th rounder. He never came across as lazy on the field, despite all of the freaking out over him I've seen from people who watched zero Memphis games all year. He also clocked a ton of playing time due to Larry Porter's teams' spectacular lack of depth.
He could easily bust, considering his awful coaching to date and how hard the NFL is to thrive in, but he's a reasonable pick (if a slight reach) and I wouldn't be at all shocked if he turned into a really valuable player.
He's basically a calculated risk, but I think the "BUST ALERT" stuff is oversold due to his anonymity before the combine.
