i'm not fully involved in the ins-and-outs of the playoff deal etc, so forgive me.

but couldn't they just take the confernece winners and go from there? Remove all the cupcake games on their schedules and fight it out for conference champ?

No, because it's going to be pretty likely that more than 1 of the top few teams will be from the same conference.
