Was it against the rules at the time? Then do it.

This whole "everyone does it so its ok" bullshit is just that. Bullshit. It doesn't become acceptable to break a rule just because a lot of people do it.

Next time a cop pulls you over for speeding see if he'll let you off because "everybody does it".

If they inspected his gloves before the game, and then he tampered with them, and when questioned about it he destroyed the gloves, it would be a similar situation.

Where did I give an "everybody does it" justification? In fact, I did just the opposite. Rice admitted to using stickum. Toss out the records.
