Always heard that the guns on a battleship are so powerful they actually knock the ship back. Never seen one fire it’s guns, so not sure.

Is the Iowa the one at Pearl Harbor? Seems like I remember doing that tour.

The Missouri is at Pearl. Toured her almost 12 years ago. It’s a really big boat with a lot of history.

There's a video somewhere showing either the Missouri or the Iowa firing all of her 16-inchers at the same time abeam, and you can see the wake of the ship bent behind her as the recoil shoved the ship sideways in the water.

My parents took me to see the USS North Carolina in the mid 60's. I am sure we toured it but what I remember is that evening they had a show. You parked and had a speaker like at a drive-in from those days. You heard the crew during a battle and they fired off the guns at various times. Very impressive to this 7 year old!

No, that's USS Missouri. Faces the USS Arizona. The Japanese surrendered on Missouri's deck, so...

No, they couldn't. Too much mass.

I was on another ship around a mile away. Not close enough to feel it, but damn sure close enough to hear it. That shit was loud. Saw the fireball when the gun went off, heard the BOOM a few seconds later.

I experienced a lot of cool things during in Navy days that I didn't really appreciate at the time. This definitely wasn't one of those. I'd been in only a few months when I saw that, and never saw it again.

Being around the hub of activities going on during the construction of such ships had to be an awesome job.
