Seriously. I absolutely don't get all the hunting restrictions. Should be open season on them all year long. Instead, they're treated like their going extinct.
Up here in the Peoples Republik of Illinois, hunters are now only allowed to use single shot rifles. I shit you not. So you either have to actually use a single shot rifle or mangle a regular rifle in such a way that it will only fire a single shot. Absolutely ****ing crazy. Meanwhile, a hundred people hit the goddamn things driving on Illinois highways today. :shake:

Essentially, it's because back in the late 1800s when there were no regs, many game animals were hunted to the edge of extinction. Some were hunted to extinction.
I agree though that the regs don't really address the current overpopulation issues, at least on the eastern side of the country. In AZ there's just not that many deer/big game, so I get the lottery system/regs in general. Back in MO when i lived there, deer were so overpopulated they were a real nuisance. I remember a G&F officer telling me back then (circa 1993?) that according to their info, deer were replacing themselves almost twice as fast as hunters were harvesting them. They probably should've allowed us to hunt deer year-round. Or at least allowed for a longer season.
