I've never really followed basketball, and never understood what the big deal was. His stats aren't that great as a pro. It sounds like he was a great college player, and maybe a great announcer? Is that the reason? Whatever the story, RIP, though.

My wife and I ran into Bill Walton at a concert at Humphrey's by the Bay in San Diego. My wife was a Clipper Skipper cheerleader during his time with the Clippers. He was pretty pleasant. He definitely was a bit buzzed!

Bill Walton is reunited with Jerry Garcia in heaven.

I’m pretty sure he officially holds the record for attending Grateful Dead concerts.

I don't really know, but I thought he was in his mid 80s.

RIP

Injuries got him. Before that, he was an excellent two way player. Won both NBA MVP and Finals MVP for Portland in the 70s before his body broke down.

Ultimately went on to become one of the more memorable basketball announcers of his time.

Seemed like a really cool guy.. Had a short stint with my favorite team the Celtics and Larry Bird..Enjoyed his broadcasts.. RIP..

This sucks, RIP Big Man! You were very good on the court but an excellent person away from it!

Portland and big men, what a sad history. Walton was great until he broke his foot and it never really healed right. Fans at the time blamed the healing issues on his changing to a vegetarian diet. But we did get our only championship before that.

Then, drafted Sabonis but he wouldn't (couldn't?) leave USSR until his knees were pretty shot. He was still pretty good but if he would have come over during his prime while teamed up with Drexler and co., Jordan may not have won quite so many rings.

And then there was Greg Odom. I was not following as closely by then but I am pretty sure he had lower extremity issues as well and never really did much as a top pick.

Such is the life of a Blazer fan.

RIP gentle old hippie. I remember Bill at UCLA. His hands would be 2 feet over the rim as he dropped it in the bucket'. Dunking wasn't allowed in college then until I think his senior year.

Pretty much spot on his NBA career never was as dominant as we figured it would be out of college. I don't know if it was injuries or whatever. He was a good announcer who didn't know when to shut his stories down and get back to the game at hand.
