And thanks for being a better option than soap operas on school sick days for kids.

"The Phil Donahue Show, meh, it's better than a soap opera."

It’s definitely not as good as Hogans Heroes or Mash re-runs

I've been watching those reruns recently, and Colonel Hogan was getting a little too confident in later episodes of the show. He was almost daring the Germans to catch him.

Can you blame him? I mean… we are talking a about a show that features funny Nazis.

Not really.

He was super-serious and legit, but with the advent of Morton Downey and Geraldo, his ratings started to drop, and he ended up having to pivot to try to get the ratings back.

That’s correct. He would have on scientist guys like Linus Paulson who talked about the real danger to the foodstuffs due to the radiation bomb from Chernobyl.

Yea, the trash TV wounded him, then Oprah gutted him.

I vividly recall my mother being glued to his show when he had a renowned atheist on the show. I can’t recall her name, but do recall my mother being totally horrified.

*Edit*

It was Madalyn Murray O’Hair. My google search suggests that she was a frequent guest of the show.

Surely there was a game show of some sort on????

Game shows were on in the mornings. Soap operas and Donahue were on in the afternoon. If I remember right Donahue came on at noon.

I respectfully disagree, it was hot topic emotional vampire daytime talk show just like the rest of them. Was it as trashy as Jerry Springer? No. But the idea was still the same.

Think this was his final episode, he was cancelled right after this.

That was Oprah, she asked if it was fake and Dynamite Kid headbutted her and gave her a shoot brainbuster on the floor.

Dona-who?

Donahue sucked. The best episode of Donahue that I can remember is when he had the economist Milton Friedman on. Milton cut him to pieces.

His son Kevin was roommates with a good friend of mine at KU. Nice guy and never really let it be known he was Phil's son unless you asked him about it.

I enjoyed watching him host The Jerry Springer show back in the day. He always had such classy guests and thought provoking conversations.
