I mean, to be fair....opponents were often playing from behind, and had to throw the ball...BUT, still, to give up more yards than all but 3 other clubs....is nothing to be proud of, I'd say. |
About time; now the Ty Law threads can all be combined into this one.

I'd say the best CB tandem in football is probably true. But I think the number one tandem will be shared with a few teams.

Ty Law is an upgrade for KC at CB -- but I don't know how much he will actually improve their Defense. He had ten picks last year -- but that was because he blew would blow off his assignment and act as a ball hawk. He made our defense look worse than it was because of his selfish play. IMO he was the downfall of our young safety Eric Coleman. Law is old, slow and he gets flagged just about every game for the "Ty Law rule." The old man can't bump WR's ten yards down the field anymore. All of these Chief fans sound like I did last year -- excited about our chances. 12 losses later, I realized that Ty Law wasn't the answer or the problem. The problem was HERM EDWARDS. The lack of clock management, the cutting of practices and conditioning lead to terrible performances and injured players. The man is a hell of a motivator, but he doesn't know X's and O's to save his life. If I were a Chiefs fan, I would be happy about the Law singing but ****ED about that idiot HERM running my team. If I were a chargers fan -- I wouldn't be too worried about KC. They are the third best team in that division. And as a Jets Fan, I am extatic that we got a 4th round pick for EDWARDS. Hell, I would have taken a 12 pack and a bag of chips. |
I'm lookin for the info on whether or not we signed Pollard....I heard we did?

Chiefs Agree to Terms with Second-Round Pick S Bernard Pollard Jul 21, 2006, 4:30:34 PM Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Friday that the club has agreed to terms of a four-year contract with S Bernard Pollard. Pollard is the fourth member of the Chiefs 2006 draft class to agree to terms with the club. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available. “We are pleased to have our second-round draft choice Bernard Pollard under contract prior to the start of training camp,” Peterson commented. “We believe that Bernard is a tremendous talent who has the potential to eventually become a starter for our team in the future. We believe he will make a solid contribution to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006 and for many years to come.” “We felt after watching Bernard Pollard in college that he was going to be a physical player in the back end of our defense and I think we found out a little bit more about that this spring,” Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards commented. “He has great range and he is eager to learn. He’s a team-oriented guy. Bernard is a guy who has speed, a great ability to tackle and will help us on special teams. When you look at our secondary I think everyone was concerned about the corner position, but when I looked at it we only had three safeties who had played a significant amount of time. I think the addition of Bernard Pollard is going to help us tremendously.” Pollard (6-1, 224) joined the Chiefs as the club’s second-round pick (54th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. Pollard entered the draft with one year of eligibility remaining at Purdue. He played in 36 games (35 starts), recording 254 tackles (164 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss (-26.0 yards), a sack (-3.0 yards), four interceptions for 19 yards, nine passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. Pollard also set a Boilermakers record with five blocked kicks, in addition to returning three blocked punts. Pollard opened all 11 games at strong safety in 2005, producing 92 tackles (64 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss (-7.0 yards), three INTs, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He was named second-team All-Big Ten by The NFL Draft Report. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native was selected first-team All-Indiana as a senior at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Pollard also competed in basketball and track in high school. |

Considering that Law has already played in Herm's D his signing should make everyone else in the secondary better.
Not only a smoother transition but also the experience and leadership can be passed on. I don't know how much better our safeties will be this year but they'll be better than they would have been without him. My only concern is Wesley deep... |
All the Chiefs have to do now is make it to the playoffs AND survive the first round,
Simple enough...right? |

your mother.... the chiefs best receiver is TG...and he has been assigned to him at times....but the chiefs don't have a good enough WR for bailey to be "assigned" to....so bailey is moved around against you all.... please don't sit there and act like kennison is actually good... |

....play in the secondary also depends on the kind of pressure your guys up front can give, and though you didn't have the sacks (most Broncos, and their fans don't....heh) your front 4/7 did well last year--hurries, overall pressure. Coupled with the coverage of your linebackers..... Bailey had a lot more help than Law last year, that's for sure. The only difference was teams were always ahead of/kicking the crap out of the Jets, so teams didn't throw against them as much---because they didn't have to..... |
Without reading through this entire thread, my answer is this:
Probably the best tandem, BUT: 1. without up-front pressure (which is a Chiefs' concern), no CB tandem could stop good opposing WRs forever. 2. The NFL has slanted the game more towards offense, and passing, in recent years. The concept of a true shut-down corner is more or less gone. 3. Law is excellent in run support as well. Dunno about Surtain. But it's fair to say that CBs have less impact on run defense than any other defensive position. So if your run defense still sucks...having great WRs won't save the day. 4. Older players have a few strikes against them. One is that they tend to get injured a bit more easily, and can take longer to recover. As Bill Belichick likes to say "depth in August is not the same as depth in November." I'll keep my fingers crossed for their heatlh. :) |
Quote:
NOTE: Our run defense last year did improve significantly. If Sims comes back healthy (and Bell is healthier,) the additions of Edwards (DT, Bufffalo) and Law will only help that cause too. |
Haven't had time to read thru this whole thread. Anyone find out the contract terms?

before we go any further... are you implying that ty law is better than champ bailey? |
I'm still amazed the NFL is able to locate a helmet that will fit over that lightbulb 5head of chump's.
I don't think Law is CB-Jesus at this point in his career, but he's an immediate upgrade over Warfield. Considering Jake PlummINT, Phillp Leaf..I mean ryan Rivers, and Aaron Brooks are throwing the division passes......Law will suffice. |

fair enough..... you're right...very tough to quantify the best at corner...but a poll targeting league officials and experts will certainly favor champ.... no one is a shut down corner anymore but bailey is widely considered the closest thing to a shut down corner in today's game.... since you aren't saying law is better....no need for us to debate on this anymore... i'm good with your comments at this point... |

i agree with this guy....(except for the jake plummer part) |

you're going off topic of my reply intent.... i was debating about stats on comparing entire secondaries...not individual players.... bringing up law has more SB rings is silly....kevin faulk has more rings than marshal faulk...so does that mean kevin is better? of course not |

Chump is a very good CB and Law will definitely be a huge upgrade over what we have had the last 3-4 years |

We got a huge upgrade. No question about that.
But I don't know why you people expect donkey fans to come in here and start bowing down. It doesn't mean a thing until they start playing the games. You don't get respect based on reputation. The Chiefs are going to have to show they can put all these pieces together and the engine turns over. |
