I said that his fashionable expression is derived from Hip Hop culture.
How does that equate to all of Hip Hop let alone Black culture?

Why does such a distinction need to be made?
Larry Johnson or the guy two doors down... This form of fashionable expression is absolutely derived from Hip Hop culture. That can't even be argued.

And again, if you think the outfit is hideous you're entitled...
But I'm certain you own something that he'd think was hideous.
It's a matter of taste.

Can we get past that?

Like I said, not trying to be argumentative, it just seems you have a different take on the subject. The woman thing was just meant as an example, not something I thought you had done.

My point is that just because he is a part of hip hop culture as you call it, does not mean that this outfit doesn't represent some disconnect he has with that culture. Maybe he doesn't quite pull it off because he's not as closely connected to hip hop as he'd like to be. Maybe he's a part of that culture, but his own individuality clashes with it as well?

Hip Hop is do what you will with what you got. Cool for him that he's chosen to make people laugh. Thats really is a good thing.

Jay? No. Lupe or Pharrell or Schwayze? Sure. I think it just looks ridiculous because Larry is a big ass athlete. If it were on one of the little impish hiphop dudes, it wouldn't look as silly.

There's nothing to pull off.
That's pretty standard dress for Hipsters these days.
I've seen this look a million times over.

It just doesn't ring true for you. And that's because you don't identify with the culture itself. And that's okay, but call a spade a spade... Sheesh!

Katipan 03-02-2009 03:19 PM

How silly to think that just because someone wants to puke when they see this particular outfit that it means they are not fully able to enjoy any of the thousands of other walking examples in his user defined socially evolved culture.

Yeah you're right.

Couldn't have been her failure to see the distinction between Hip Hop and Black cultures that has me leads me to believe she's disaffected.

Or the fact that she thinks he's struggling to pull the look off.

Or the fact she thinks his attire represents a disconnect with the culture that it's derived from.

Sorry, I don't see any culture/style in those clothes, other than the shoes. Put a non-celebrity in those clothes and he'd be laughed out of the bar and back into the bayou.

Of course you don't. Because you don't identify with the culture.
You really ought to recognize that fact.

Just like I don't get Rock culture and skinny jeans that force your nuts back up into your stomach.

Hardly means there isn't value in it.
I just don't understand it.

bogey 03-02-2009 03:57 PM

I assume it's okay if I have my opinion. In my opinion, that hat looks goofy and I've never seen anyone in the hip hop culture where anything like it. However, if that hat was available to comedians on the stages at Branson...

Actually, I do. I grew up the only white kid on my baseball team until I was 13. My best friend is mexican and two of my travel partners are black. Just because a celebrity (white or black) wears something, doesn't bring any culture to the attire. LJ has just mixed up his Garanimals. He's mixing 3,4,5 cultures into one. Is he a hunter, a trucker, a hip-hop star, a lumberjack?

I might not understand cultures, but I can recognize them and accept them. I can't recognize what he wants to be.

BTW...I never understood the skinny jeans either. I like the clacker on my bell to have breathing room:D

Never really cared for them.

Hip Hop fashion has always accompanied a wide variety of influences.
Again, this is not a unique look. It's a hipster look that's traveled the country for 3 years now.

My point is, there's nothing cultural or original here. It's just a mix of crap. It would be like me going to the bar in my cowboy boots, mesh tank-top, and plaid golf pants. There's no culture and since I'm not a celebrity, it's just ugly.

The culture disagrees with you. Again, this is standard hipster dress.
There's nothing manufactured about it. Johnson is merely hopping on a fashion trend that's been in play for years now.

I know how much a gallon of milk weighs.
I know the origin of the phrase Pole Position.
I know all the names of all the wives of Henry VIII.
I know how the hook is made that lifts an auto welder into a John Deere cab.

That's hardly the same thing. Way to stretch it though for the sake of argument.

You say this like being debative's a bad thing.
I won't apologize for having strong opinions and a prowess for expressing them.

You haven't made a point the entire thread.

ahahahahaha

Then why would you tell me "fair enough?"
Why spend hours doing this while you work?

Your 22 years are showing.

I know why Lake Lloyd was made.
I know how much a gallon of milk weighs.
I know the origin of the phrase Pole Position.
I know all the names of all the wives of Henry VIII.
I know how the hook is made that lifts an auto welder into a John Deere cab.

And I can still recite the first 20 minutes of Deep Throat and the preamble to the Constitution.
What the hell else do I need brain cells for?

Do you know how much a gallon of feathers weighs? See thats real knowledge right there and well the first thirty minutes of Deep Throat are just gagging anyway. The minutia of your knowledge is fairly impressive and it seems some of your brain cells are actually at work.

Oh and I hacked your webcam so no flipping me off or I'll see it...

I spend hours on this forum quite often.
It's a pasttime.

But I love the idea that I'm indulging myself because I think you're great at presenting ideas.
