Anyone else think that Cassel looks a bit like Drew Bledsoe in that clip?

I noticed that from that point on, Brodie went apeshit if the center was late with the snap.

Later in the game I saw Haley say "don't be a pussy"

What did you tell him on the side lines?

Players didn't care for Gunthers use of the Lord's name. Haley should take heed. Then again it might not matter much about a decade latter.

Can we get a .gif of this? Too funny.

I love me some Todd Haley. I kinda wish I could see him as TG's coach, just to see the dynamic between the two.

I'll bet if they measured Haley's testosterone level it'd be well over 1,000 (normal is 500-800).

Indeed.

When Croyle threw a touchdown, Haley commended him.

"That's the way to be a quarterback Brodie, way to go."

This is the NFL. Respect is not given. It is earned.

Just sayin that basic human psychology 101 would indicate that the players will not respect Haley because of his antics. They might perform out of fear and intimidation but will not perform out of respect or a desire to perform well for him based on that respect.

If he's fair (as GoChiefs pointed out he was with Croyle) they'll respect him.

And more importantly, if they WIN, they'll respect him even more.

Maybe. But chances are they will just accept him vs. respect him. No one likes to see a teammate or coworker or student belittled because they know one day it could be them.

Again, fear and intimidation are a motivator only to a point.

I understand that athletes these days are prima donnas and that the type of personality/coaching style that Haley has does not compute with the mind set of those individuals. This ain't the sports world of 20 years ago.

If you were talking about an office manager, you'd be making sense.

Players that dont want to 'get' Haleys style will get 3 choices...coal mine, moonshine, take it down the line.

Did you not see the example GoChiefs provided where he gave Brodie a pat on the back after the TD?

It's not like he's lashing out at anybody, any time, for no good reason.

But I guess you've got to find something new about your least favorite team to complain about.

I guess only time will tell. I'm pretty confident in my belief that his coaching style will win him more problems than points both on the board and in the locker room.

I guess Tom Couglin's hardass approach failed the Giants a couple of years ago when they won the Super Bowl.

I guess BIll Cowher's hardass appproach won him more problems than games, and a SB, which is why he had to retire.

I guess Mike Tomlin's hardass approach had the same effect.

Oh, and of course Bill Bellicheck's hardass approach is totally loser.

I'm not saying all coaches can't win using this method. I am saying that it won't work with most and especially with this particular one in this situation. The team is too new, the management to new, the changes too fresh for a new rookie coach to be throwing around his weight and acting like that. Especially given the lack of veteran leadership on the team.

Almost every single HC that has won a SB has a reputation as a demanding hardass.

From Vince Lombardi to Hank Stram to Chuck Noll to Bill Walsh to Jimmy Johnson to Bill Bellichick to Mike Tomlin.

The only "nice guy" coaches to win are Dick Vermeil and Tony Dungy.

I think Haley cares more that his players have self-respect. Pushing them to be their best and not tolerating the mental mistakes or soft play is going to do that more than being their best friend or being soft on them. That was Herm's way. And it led to a team that had almost no self-respect. He's in charge of getting rid of their stinking thinking. He's the one who will give them their check up from the neck up.

I disagree with your analysis. I tend to believe that Todd Haley understands football psychology 101 just fine.

What he did with Croyle was not belittling him. Now if he had called him a dumb **** then you might have an argument. But the mere act of expressing his disapproval in the aggressive way he did probably got Croyle's attention. It was clearly a teaching moment. One that was delivered with tough love.

He probably wouldn't have had to say that to him if Brodie had been looking at him instead of acting as though he wasn't paying attention.

BWillie 09-15-2009 12:04 AM

I think why Haley is going to be successful with his approach is because it's not a surprise to players. They knew coming into this year Haley was an asshole. I bet Haley's first meeting with the team he advised them how he coaches and that he will at times, cuss his brains out and yell at you like there is no tomorrow, and you are just going to have to deal with it. As long as he treats everybody the same, I don't think there will be any problems.

I'd like to get an audio feed from Haley over the course of an entire game or an entire season. I edit it down to the best parts and then loop it over and over again in my house 24/7. I can't believe the TV people opened a mic anywhere near him. I'm somewhat surprised that they keep showing live video of him since it's so easy to figure out the profanities by reading his lips.

A buddy of mine whom I used to work with said he was a ball boy on the Chiefs sideline when Gunther was HC. He said he's never heard so much cussing on a sideline or even in a sport period. Got to the point Gunther would just make up cuss words and cuss basically just to cuss.

What a mad old grunken German.

I'd rather see Haley cussing than standing there, looking at the clock, and wondering what's for lunch.

Did anybody catch Haley saying "Bullshit call" on audio? They had the boom mike on him at one point, and Haley was yelling at the ref saying it was a bullshit call. The sound guy turned the volume down pretty quick, but you could still catch it rather obviously...

Yeah, that's why I bumped this thread. Tribal Warfare made a post about it which I quoted in post 149.

Yeah, I heard that. IIRC, it was after the Wade blocking in the back penalty.

Whoops... sorry I missed that...

And yeah, you can tell that the camerafolks are already keen to Haley's mouth. They're jumping to shots of Haley the instant there's a screwup just waiting for him to provide some drama on camera. And so far, he's not letting them down.

I wonder who the first player will be to snap back at Haley and get into a shouting match on the sideline?

I wonder if the league will/can fine Haley for the "bullshit call" just because it got out over the airwaves.

Haley cracks me up.

I don't know about that. I've seen lots of instances of coaches doing the exact same thing with no consequences. I bet they could if they really wanted to, but I doubt they see it as a bad thing. Just a guess, but I'd think the league would overlook that kind of thing in favor of the "interesting drama" factor that it creates. Sound bytes like that sell....
