Well, if he doesn't succeed as a head coach at UF he's got no excuses. He'll have all the resources he could ever ask for.

No doubt. It's kind of funny though watching Gator fans try to spin this as a great hire, considering the names they were throwing around before the Muschamp news surfaced.

Stoops? Petrino? Saban? Mullen? Gruden? Muschamp.

One of these things is not like the other......

First, Texas was 7th in total defense (51st in pts/gm) in 2010. The whole team was awful in 2010. Their O was 59th overall and 87th in ppg. Even a great D is going to break with an O that bad.

But go ahead and discount that Muschamp was DC in the SEC for 5 years and each time his D was top-10 in the country. Discount that the previous 2 years in 2009 and 2008 Texas his D's were 3rd and 50th in total D (8th and 20th in pts/gm), respectively.

Then look at Malzahn who 4 years ago was a high school coach. His offense at Arkansas was good (with McFadden, Jones, and Hillis - none of whom he recruited) and his two years at Tulsa his O's were mixed but trending downward: 38th in Total O & 47th in ppg in 2009 and 2nd in total O & pts in 2008.

No one mentioned Muschamp because no one even thought he was available. He was HCIW at Texas, a top-3 job. Yet Malzahn was a better hire? ROFL

51st in points a game with arguably more talent than any school in the country? Sounds like the makings of a great head coach. Kudos!

Who wouldn't rather have Will Muschamp over Bob Stoops, Nick Saban, or Bobby Petrino.

Just admit it - you look silly for throwing out those ridiculous names earlier in the process. Muschamp is a fine head coach prospect, but he's no different than any other "hot" coordinator that is available every year.

It would have been impressive if Florida snagged a big name HC like the fans bragged about, but frankly Muschamp is the most meh name that was mentioned.

Could it be a homerun hire? Sure. But in has to be a disappointment, whether you admit or not, considering the names that were bandied about leading up to it and his complete lack of head coaching experience.

On the other hand, Malzahn's offense has been incredible this year at Auburn. In a vacuum, the Malzahn hire at Vandy is a much better hire than Muschamp at Florida. That is a no doubt homerun, even though he will most likely never win more games in a season than Muschamp will at UF.

Nobody mentioned Muschamp be cause he was a HCIW (behind a coach that just signed a monster extension) but Stoops and Saban were bandied about?

Of course the Muschamp hire has risk to it. He hasn't been a HC. I was throwing out what I was hearing, which was Stoops/Petersen. All of the "insiders" were wrong. All the media outlets were wrong. It happens.

I wonder if he was their first choice?

I think billay meant that Malzahn staying at Auburn won't have an effect on Auburn's expected suckiness next year (the implication being that there is an expectation that a Malzahn departure would mean the Tigers would suck).

They have 24 Seniors on the team and Cam Newton likely won't be back. I didn't point this out to him because having a conversation with someone who thinks everything they say = fact is rather pointless.

Plus Bama and Florida will be improved IMO and Georgia will be the new Auburn.

Muschamp just had his introductory press conference. Very exciting to listen to, an intense speaker, high energy, and gets you pumped up.

Said Florida will run a pro-style O and pro-style D.. so the spread option is likely gone. Wants to hire an OC that has both pro & college experience.

Said as long as Will Muschamp is the head coach at Florida, Urban Meyer will be involved with this program. He's not worried about perception, only worried about the players and winning.

Very satisfied with the staff Muschamp has hired.

Tough call which I thankfully don't have to make. I think Florida needs Weis more than the Chiefs do, mainly because Muschamp is a defensive minded coach where Haley is an offensive minded coach.

The final member of Muschamp's staff is DLine coach Bryant Young. Yes, that Bryant Young who won a Super Bowl and went to Pro Bowls for the 49ers and was on the 1990 All-Decade Team. Awesome :)
