Realized i have no idea what alot of that shit means. Gonna have to post what i've got here and see what you all think of it.

Now is not a good time, bro. Can you wait a couple months?

AMD's new 4+ GHz (slot AM3+) 6 and 8-core processors are hitting the shelves in October. Also, PCI-E 3.0 video cards are going to be coming out soon (Radeon HD 7000 series). We're pretty much on the cusp of a new generation and investing in the current one is going to seem like a big waste of money very soon.

What's your budget?

It's never a good time to buy a new computer and investing in a current one is always a big waste of money.

Well, we're hitting the next big step here, these are pretty fundamental changes (like you will need a whole new mobo just to be able to utilize this shit). This is not an incremental change, this is the next generation.

There will always be a "next generation" just around the corner. The technology never stops developing. If you wait till then to upgrade, there will be something equally as enticing to wait a little longer for.

Just build your shit as best you can when you're ready. No matter when you build, it will be outdated in a matter of months.

Sofa King 09-01-2011 10:19 AM

Well, there's outdated and then there is outdated.

I will, say, however, that the prices are outrageously good on the current gen stuff right now. You can build a real beast without breaking the bank, Sofa, so maybe you shouldn't listen to my advice and build yourself a nice machine right now. Link up your choices.

I need a new desktop, but have decide to wait until the end of the year to see what develops. It will be interesting to see what the prices will be on this new stuff. I expect with the economy the way it is, that the initial pricing might not nearly be as high as in years past with new tech, but we will see.

Pants, have you seen anything on price ranges for PCI-E 3.0 or the new AMD cards. I have not looked around for any articles on the new stuff yet.

Yeah, the new AMD FX series (AM3+ slot) processors will be in the $300 range (compared to the current $150). I'm not sure on the new 7000's Radeons, but I'm assuming it will go from $250 all the way to $700+ depending on what you want.

They're not going to be lowering the price of new technology just because the economy is struggling. It's going to be pretty expensive.

Well. Take a look fellas. See what you think. I'm open to suggestions. I've pretty much gone with loochy's build, and made some changes of my own along with recommendations from a buddy of mine.

Advice/ recommendations/ comments are welcome. This is my first build and would likely have to last awhile. Gaming, dvds, casual use mostly.

FYI... For Newegg, the easiest way to post your list is to e-mail your shopping cart to yourself, and copy and paste the e-mail to the forum...

I'll 2nd this. I've had much better experience with the Radeon cards as of late. I think the picture quality, drivers, and performance is better that the NVidia counterpart.

LIES.

I will admit ATI offers more bang for your buck these days, but I keep thinking eventually I will buy in to nVidias 3D stuff.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1DG9Y5

that it the correct link. this shits all over the amd build an it is the same price. i even tried to build it at newegg an couldn't beat the sale price this site is having.

like i told him if he can spend the extra i would upgrade to the evga 570 video card. but as it it still runs circles around the amd machine.

also if you look i took off the free water cooling set up it gave you. you can switch it back if you want. i don't know if your into overclocking or not. but those all in 1 water cooling things have a nasty history of leaks. i personally would not use them. if you going to water cool go all out an do a real set up as those all in one units are not that great anyways

but it also has no ssd. the ssd isn't really worth it for his use. he will not notice the gains from in playing d3. his pc will start faster. but that 200 bucks is better spent on other parts. ssd can always be upgraded later one

I've been running a Phenom II 940 Deneb for 3 years now and have zero regrets. Awesome processor.

Plan on getting at least 8 more months out of it as primary machine.

I do admit however crying myself to sleep some nights for not dropping the extra $350 dollars when a webpage doesn't load .00005 seconds faster and I get 72fps in BC2 instead of 78fps.

Oh, why did I bring this up at work? :deevee:

I've got one...there is a HUGE difference. Windows boots full in about 25 seconds from turning on the computer. There is no more waiting while the hard drive reads and reads and reads...as soon as windows appears on the screen everything is ready to roll.

Also, the SSD makes everything load fast. BF2 loads maps so fast that I load before the server does and I get kicked. BF3 loads and plays very quickly as well.

I don't reboot too often so I'm planning on using it as a software partition. Graphic editing, games, etc. If I like it I might buy another one as a boot partition. I'm not in the mood to reimage and start over at the moment. I will probably keep a seperate hard drive just for file storage anyway.

ReynardMuldrake 10-07-2011 08:39 AM

This is the drive for the curious. I picked the one closest to $100 that got the best reviews:

Actually I don't think my mobo is SATA III but it's backwards compatible so that just makes it more futureproof.

I was running 32-bit windows. Just installed 64-bit the other day so I will order some more from newegg.

Those components cost $400.

allen_kcCard 10-08-2011 07:44 AM

I could probably swing that sooner than later to use for gaming and buy some more time before I get the basement office all setup like I want it. I have a case that is still fine, but the guts of it are all seriously outdated.

Hammock Parties 10-08-2011 07:56 AM

The case was $100.

Looks nice. I wonder how much a comparable system would cost with components ordered separately and built in home.

EDIT - Not bad...just finding as close as I could find on newegg, the total price there came up to $1563

I just had to put one together. Went through Newegg for most of the parts, nice Corsair Full-Tower Case, Corsair 650W Power Supply. ASUS Sabertooth X58 MoBo, ASUS DVD Burner, ASUS NVidia GeForce GTS 450 1GB Video Card, 24 GB RAM, 2 3TB SATA 6 HD's. Dual booting between Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2. Using it for Hyper-V, prepping for my classes. i7 3.2 Ghz processor.
