One of the things that has always bothered me about computer roleplaying games, particularly so-called "open world" games, is that invariably role playing always ends up taking a back seat to the mechanics of the game itself. First off, most games just don't offer the freedom to create any type of character. Even when they do, more often than not, a situation, scenario, or encounter will occur in the game and the only way to get past it is to play in a manner that is not consistent with, or even counter to, how I have envisioned my character in the game. Few computer games have ever come close to the freedom and imagination that some of us grew up with playing pen-and-paper games.

A good example of this is the fact that most games seem to automatically associate "dexterity" or "agility" with ranged weapons. This one has always been a personal beef of mine. A lot of games automatically assume that a fighter is an axe-wielding monolith in plate armor while an agile hero must use bows or guns. Most games don't allow for the player to explore the idea of a graceful swordsman or a hunter that relies on melee weapons and fast-twitch reflexes. Still other games have areas or encounters that simply can't be won using any and every play style. Charging into a room of brigands with your sword drawn ends up with you dropping dead mid-sprint as they pepper you with arrows. Your only option is to draw a bow and shoot them before they shoot you.

Here I am 3 paragraphs in and haven't yet mentioned Amalur - I do apologize but there's a reason for it:

After playing the full 45-minute demo last night, I'm fairly confident the game addresses everything I've mentioned and more.

The first half of the demo is, more than anything else, a trainer to get you familiar with the controls. About 10 minutes in, the player is presented with exactly one of those scenarios I was talking about - charge in and die. It was at this point that Amalur snagged me.

The narrator suggested I pick up a pair of daggers and enter "stealth" mode. Sure, I could have picked them off 1-by-1 with a bow but the game didn't MAKE me. Instead, I snuck around the back of the area, positioned myself behind my prospective victim, and killed him in one swift, gruesome animation. It was awesome!

The other thing that was awesome was the equipment. Some games rely heavily on "drops" and others on "chests". Still others only offer the best gear through shops. By the end of the demo, I had assembled my best gear from ALL of those places. I even had a cool pair of gloves that I made from pieces at the forge.

The only major gripe I have at this point is the movement. The camera panning and movement are too fast. The camera is easily fixed by turning down the sensitivity. There doesn't appear to be a similar mechanism for the movement itself. It almost feels like the old digital d-pad in that there's only 16 absolute directions you can go and this results in unnatural movement that is "squared" instead of fluid.

I did have some texture mirroring but no other obvious graphical bugs, like the aforementioned headless NPCs. There were several little quirks with conversation - some NPCs responded and talked but in some cases, I would hit A and the game would just freeze for 20-30 seconds before the conversation interface popped up. There were still other NPCs where the interface simply never came up at all.

This was very helpful and I agree completely with what you said about viable choices for choosing paths. I think I'm going to go might/sorcery, use sorcery to make up for what might lacks in distance and aoe damage. I should've dl the demo on my xbox because my pc maybe wasn't powerful enough to play it without it being very slow and lagged. But overall I am liking the mega variety of fates and gameplay. It may look "cartoony" but the graphics are still advanced and fluid and that's what you want.

Thanks htis! :thumb:

htismaqe 01-21-2012 11:02 AM

I didn't think the graphics looked necessarily cartoonish.

In fact, up close a lot of the humanoids look like comic book characters - probably seeing some of MacFarlane's influence there.

Bump 01-21-2012 12:30 PM

this looks cool, but since I'm not even close to finishing Skyrim and I still have Dark Souls too (which I actually forgot about). I think I will just wait to buy this

The Franchise 01-21-2012 02:05 PM

Played the demo.......and I'm glad that I reserved it. I'll be putting some time into this game.

ME1 and 2 are two of my top-5 games of all time. ME3 is one of the most anticipated titles (for me) that I can ever remember.

I think I'm actually a bit burned out on fantasy, as a gaming genre. Between ME3 and the old republic I'm really excited to be able to play some games that take place in more of a science fiction (or space fantasy) environment.

Although oddly I read a lot more fantasy than science fiction. Then again, maybe that's part of it.

Anyway, I might play this eventually. I think in a general sense I'm going to at least try to stop pre-ordering and buying games at launch, and try to get myself into the habit of waiting a number of months after release for GotY editions.

I've been doing that lately and all I can say is that it has saved me a lot of money. For example, I ended up not getting Skyrim AT ALL. ROFL

Yeah, I didn't get Skyrim or Arkham City. I wish I hadn't bought The Witcher 2.

I'm trying really hard to resist the urge to buy the Collector's Edition of ME3...

The Witcher 2 -GI magazine has been talking up the console port lately. Apparently it's every bit as good as the PC original, with new areas and content.

Bump this baby, I am playing this and loving it. It's kind of like Elder scrolls with action only downside being the graphics remind me of Wow even though they are much sharper as i'm not much of a cartoony graphics guy. The fun factor is at least 9/10 on this and unlike most games i plan on finishing this. Thanks for the info Setsuna this game really plays nothing like what i thought it would. I like the combos a lot.

Several of the little bugs I experienced in the demo are gone. The movement seems a BIT better but turning the camera sensitivity all the way down seems to still be required.

Absolutely LOVING this game.

The only bug i noticed was selecting the last line of dialogue is somewhat tricky although it doesn't always happen.

You mean when the choices are listed as bullets instead of around the wheel?

I always do the last line first and haven't ever had an issue.

By the way, I don't think the graphics are too cartoony. They definitely remind me of a comic book.

I didn't get a chance to play it last night.

Does the game allow you to start from where you were at in the demo? Or does it make you start over again?

Has anyone checked out the shit you got for pre-ordering at Gamestop? Any good?

You have to start over again.

From what I understand, the Gamestop items (as well as the demo unlockables, etc.) are in a chest in the 1st town. I haven't gotten there yet.

Whichever controls you are more comfortable with. I don't think it differs much from any of the platforms which makes it great. But don't take my word for it. Look on IGN or something. Make sure you know though. Me personally, 360 is what I own, and my computer is reserved for SWTOR right now.

I read somewhere that it IS wearable at the beginning but doesn't scale with your character, I'll have to see if I can find it.

htismaqe 02-08-2012 04:36 PM

Found it:

http://reckoning.amalur.com/en/r/faq

Are the Reckoning demo items functional? Can I actually use/wear them in-game, or are they only ornamental?
Yes, the items you unlock via the Reckoning demo are all things your Reckoning characters can equip and use. Each item does have stats and lore associated with it, but they are not intended to be the best equipment you can get.

Will the Reckoning demo items be available to all the characters I create in Reckoning, or only the first character I create?
The demo items you’ve earned will be available for every character you create in Reckoning.

Do any of the Reckoning demo items have a level restriction?
Some of the Reckoning demo items do have minor level and attribute equip requirements, however they are intended to be great beginning equipment and are leveled appropriately for that purpose. All your characters will either already meet the necessary equip requirements, or be within one level of doing so by the time you reach Gorhart, where the items are located.

Do any of the Reckoning demo items scale with my character’s level?
No, the Reckoning demo items are intended to be awesome items to help you get started in Reckoning. They’ll give you a great edge as you forge your path in Amalur, but they do not level up with your character.

htismaqe 02-08-2012 04:37 PM

Honestly, I love the approach.

Most often the unlockable pre-order items are uber-powerful and you either never use them because you don't want to ruin the early game or you can't use them until very late because they have level requirements.

The Franchise 02-08-2012 06:50 PM

Awesome. Well at least I won't have to **** with the horrible weapons that you usually are forced to fight with in the beginning.

Bump 02-08-2012 09:27 PM

this game is pretty fun, a little easy though. I guess I shoulda started on hard, but I'm just renting it, so I'm just gonna try and hurry up the play through.

htismaqe 02-09-2012 03:14 PM

I still haven't made it to the chest with all my stuff in it...spent all my time exploring last night and ****ing around...

Bump 02-10-2012 12:05 AM

I'm enjoying this, I like the variety of weapons you can use and the paths you can take with your build. The action and controls are fluid, not sure why it's getting beat up on review sites. It's a well done game, I dig it.

htismaqe 02-10-2012 08:45 AM

It got an 8/10 from Game Informer magazine but the complaints were pretty mild compared to the praise.

They weren't fond of the story ("unremarkable, forgettable"), the fact that it wasn't truly a wide-open world and that your actions didn't seem to have a lasting impact on said world, and that the varied loot apparently becomes a lot less varied late in the game.

They loved the combat and the leveling up aspects - the combat drew favorable comparisons to God of War.

A few thoughts on some things that have already been mentioned:
  1. I cannot reiterate loudly enough how fluid the combat is. You can go from hammer smash, to dagger slash, to lightning bolt with amazing ease. It really makes for an interesting, dynamic feel even though it's, at its essence, just mashing buttons.
  2. The unlockable Gamestop items are better than the run of the mill starting gear but they're not seriously overpowered. You'll actually probably want to replace them sooner than you think. The big drawback with the armor is that they are SET items, meaning the best of their effects are only gained when using all of them. Individually, they really aren't that great.
  3. I ran into a real issue with the unlockables since I had all of the Gamestop gear plus the Shepard's stuff from the demo. I was used to using "Take All" when looting chests and did just that when I got to the unlockables chest in town. Of course, my inventory was then completely full and since there's no place to stash (that I can find) in the very first town, I was faced with selling stuff I didn't really want to sell in order to have room to keep adventuring.
  4. Hard difficulty doesn't seem much harder than normal. But that might be because...
  5. I'm getting MUCH better chest/loot drops on Hard than I did on Normal. I only played the area from the end of the tutorial to the 1st town once on Normal (not including the demo) and did not find any gear I wanted to instantly equip rather than sell. On 2 Hard playthroughs, I've found 4 items that were quite a bit better than what I was already using.

The Franchise 02-10-2012 11:00 AM

I'm hoping that like any other RPG.....you can purchase a house to store your shit in. The unlockable stuff is worth 0 gold.....and I know I'm not going to want to carry around all of it for the entire game.

You can buy a house to store your stuff, it explicitly states so in the game manual.

The problem is that I have yet to find one in the first town and given it's small size, I'm guessing there isn't one until you get to a bigger town.

Yeah, I actually restarted and just left the chest unopened, since the items are cool but not all that powerful. I'm having more fun just collecting stuff.

That one has been around for a while and it's still funny.

Has anybody ever seen the LARP episode of Reno 911? Hilarious...

I've been concentrating exclusively on Might - I've developing a fighting "style" using a Great Sword, the 2nd level of special move (the one that let's you do a special swing out of the blocking stance), and harpoon to pull things close.

This game is way fun and I'm only like Level 8.

I'm going exclusively Mage, wish i'd split it between Mage and Thief though, always have the next playthrough.

You don't necessarily have to wait for another playthrough.

Spoiler!

So are you seriously like almost level 30?

I played A LOT this weekend (several hours more than I usually would game) and I'm a few XP away from level EIGHT.

I've unlocked:

Spoiler!

This game must be truly huge.

Yeah, duh. You get 3 points per level. So you're about the same level as me.

Im going the Jack of all Trades route

How is it working right now?

About the only complaint I have right now is that the game isn't creating as much tension as I would like. It's just incredibly easy, even on Hard difficulty.

It's further complicated by the fact that I discovered the healing potion recipe in about 30 seconds of experimenting with combinations (the reagents have "affinities" so it's not hard to figure out what to combine to get simple potions) and 1 point of Alchemy is all it takes to harvest a nearly unlimited supply of reagents to make health potions.

Also, some of the "big moments" I've had so far seem a little anti-climactic. I won't expound any further without spoiler tags but there just haven't been too many "now that was an accomplishment" moments.

So what's the verdict? Better than Skyrim? Worse? About the same? Or too different to compare?

you can't really compare the 2. Skyrim is an EPIC adventure. KoA is a nice little change of pace and it's more casual I guess and the combat is kind of like a beat em up with cool abilities. It almost feels like a single player MMO in a way. It's easy, but I like it, it's enjoyable. I didn't even buy KoA, I just got it through gamefly, but I almost wish I did buy it just to support the dev.

if you want a challenge, I recommend Dark Souls, that's a hardcore RPG. If you haven't played it, it sounds like you'd like it. I haven't played it in months, I'm gonna get into again eventually.

The comparison to an MMO is probably a good one - KoA has quest hubs, open yet linear areas, etc.

Yeah, the sequel is coming out soon. That's almost TOO hard. :)
