Here is what you wrote:

"By it's definition"

As you posted above, "it's" is correct when used as a contraction of "it is" or "it has."

Therefore, for what you wrote above to be correct, you must think that the non-contracted sentence would have been "By it is definition," which is obviously incorrect. Therefore, what you wrote above is incorrect.

A thread about words.

I can live with typos.

We all make them.

Almost all, anyway.

Yes, but since no one answered my damn question in the fishing thread, I thought I'd try here instead.

I did not peruse the fishing thread.

I doubt that I could answer your question if I had, if the question was about fishing.

proper use of "that"

That was a correct assumption.

And, yes Donger, I know that the commas and periods are supposed to be inside the quotes.

However that rule was put into place because of printing and displacement.

That was not the rule prior to printers, and the British still continue to place the punctuation outside the quote.

And just why, you may ask, do they belong there? Well, it seems to be the result of historical accident. When type was handset, a period or comma outside of quotation marks at the end of a sentence tended to get knocked out of position, so the printers tucked the little devils inside the quotation marks to keep them safe and out of trouble. But apparently only American printers were more attached to convenience than logic, since British printers continued to risk the misalignment of their periods and commas.

:Poke:

It is an "extra" word. It is not improper in anyway though. In writing class when we have to have 15 page papers and 25,000 word short stories they actually teach us to find places to use these "extra" words.

We don't grade on word count at CP. Your way is the lazy way, and that's that......
