I am surprised at the amount of respect still given to the flag and the song, especially after what happened in NAM

I too would prefer America the Beautiful, but as an instrumental the Star Spangled Banner is too familiar to the world. I don't think it would have the impact to have America the Beautiful played as an instrumental during the olympics.

America the Beautiful is about how pretty the mountains look. BFD

Star Spangled Banner is about ****ing persevering no matter what the hell comes at you.

I'm not that patriotic of a guy - frankly I think patriotism is more than a little reeruned. I mean, the only reason anyone thinks America is the "greatest nation on earth" (which is a ridiculous concept - as if such a thing can be qualified) is because you were born here. but dammit the Star Spangled Banner kicks ass.B
America the Beautiful? Seriously?

I mean, if you're gonna change it, My Country, 'Tis of Thee is way more in the American spirit.

I love the Star Spangled Banner as our anthem. I don't really care where the music came from and the lyrics mean more to me than saying how blessed and beautiful America is. I think the fact that it's about a specific event that in the mind of the poet summed up the American spirit is way cooler than a song written specifically to praise the nation in general.

So....You went to a ballgame over the weekend....I guess on every major highway along the ride the US Army had checkpoints every half mile with hummers a crew of 4 and a 50 cal. Once you got into KC there was a Police checkpoint on every block and you tied a colored rag on your steering wheel, side or rear view mirror or better yet you flew a flag of the prophet that best identified your faith so you wouldn't get pulled over at the checkpoint and searched.

Then when you got to the parking area 1/2 mile maybe more from the stadium your car was searched by a dog team to ensure you weren't driving a car loaded with explosives. Then you and your....oh that's right, wife, girlfriend or daughter couldn't attend with you because their really not worthy to attend a function like a ballgame.

When you finally got into the stadium safely and were enjoying yourself I could see where it would be a real pain in the ass to remove your cap when you stood and listened to a worthless song.

Damn America really sucks.....Don't forget cerfew at 10:00 pm you gotta be off the streets.

Evidently your not a baseball fan. They play it at every basball game in the 7th inning since 9/11.

9/11 was a tramatic experience for the country. Baseball helped heal the country by allowing many fellow fans and citzens to briefly pause to reflect on the loss. I'm okay with a social norm of taking off your baseball hat. Fair or not customs change over time, it is an expectation among the majority these days.

Now, I'd never say anything to someone and would probably tell someone to cool it if they were being obnixous about it. It should be voluntary,

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I was at a game where someone was telling someone else to take their hat off. He did it a 2nd time and a guy a couple of rows behind him told him to shut up, they are free to do whatever they want. The guy yelling turns around ready to yell at the hippy or communist and it was obviously a soldier. He had a marine haircut and was built rock solid and was holding his 2-3 year old daughter. He said nothing and turned around.

007 05-23-2012 05:16 PM

I would stand and remove my hat for the national anthem but not for God Bless America. Now, if they changed that to the national anthem of course I would then.

Last I checked, there is only one recognized national anthem.

I don't give a shit if someone wants to remove their hat during anything, I do find it funny when they don't want to then want to make a big deal out of it, then mock those who think its a big deal the other way.

It's not really a big deal, unless you want to make it one. Then you become no different than the other side.

No, not one bit.....I think considering how for the most part the safety and freedom we as Americans have are taken for granted by many....And taking your hat off during the playing of any anthem is just a sign of respect for those who have given all in order to preserve those freedom and our way of life.

One of the great things is....You have a choice if you want to remove your hat or not.

Before we know it we'll be having mini-concerts in between every inning.

“Be it known, that I, James C. Boyle, of Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and improved Saluting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel device for automatically effecting polite salutations by the elevation and rotation of the hat on the head of the saluting party when said person bows to the person or persons saluted, the actuation of the hat being produced by mechanism therein and without the use of hands in any manner.”

This is a good start. Why was this never developed further?

Oh, shit. I was looking for a saluting hat and found a Nazi!

Is that normal now for the neo Nazis to hold up a couple of fingers to make a pretend Hitler 'stache?

As a bit of Hitler trivia, he initially had a big wide moustache, but when he was a soldier in WWI he trimmed it because otherwise his gas mask didn't fit properly. Then he kept the look afterwards.
