I ****ing hate it when you people act like this....... You ****ing depress me...
Make some Raider jokes or something... |
Depends on how you really define giving up. I will always be a Chiefs fan but I think I gave up on them after the Raiders game we lost right before the playoffs in 2010. Now I watch with no real expectations and just figure they are what they are and will probably never be a contender again.
that does not mean I will stop being a fan of the team though. |
The only way I'd give up is if they moved the team to Toronto or something...

I'll never stop being a fan of the teams I love to watch and have cheered for since my childhood. Am I the crazy fan at the age of 41 that I was at 21 ... or even 31? No.
I no longer get incredibly PO'ed if something horrible happens, I'm married with 3 kids and I have a completely different set of focal points. Am I annoyed when things go south? Yes... but, things are much more in perspective now than they were years ago. Even if I lived in Denver and could afford it with ease, I doubt that I'd own season tickets - I'd try to go to 1 or 2 games, but I'm not dedicating a full day and thousands of dollars each year to watch the games and pay for over the top expensive food. Granted ... and this is not a jab, but when I look at "diehard fans" of teams like KC, Browns, Lions, etc ... I wonder "how do you they maintain that level of intensity for such a long period of time?" It has to take a toll which is one of the reasons I think you see a lot more 'reality' with older fans of teams. I'll go to Wizards every now and then in Plano, where the KC fans go - freaking huge crowds - most bring families (which isn't always advised, IMHO), but they show up in great force with decorations - tailgate and they're "IN IT"... and honestly, it's fans like that when I think it would be great for a team like KC to win the Lombardi. My fandom aside, every true fan should experience greatness. Those 2 years in the late 90s as a Broncos' fan were incredible... at times during the last 12 seasons, I've relied on those seasons as comfort for better days ahead. Some of you are way overdue on your ability to experience that... there are a dozen or so 'great owners' in the NFL, owners that are focused on always improving while others seem to be in it for just the bottom line. It's sad. |

If I were a Chiefs fan the worst part to me would be knowing how good they were in the 90's and came away with nothing.... Chiefs should own atleast 3 Lombardis by now

I had watched every game since 93 but towards the end of last season I made up my mind that I was not watching Matt Cassell take another snap for this team. The fact that he can enter a 4th season as the starter just blows my mind. I didn't see any of the game yesterday, not even highlights and I'm probably in a much better mood because of it.

Between the Herm era, and this place, my fandom is much healthier now.
Wrongly, I used to let how the Chiefs performed on Sunday, affect my whole week. That second half yesterday, didn't even ruin my afternoon, let alone the whole day. I didn't even watch the second half of he 4th quarter, I went out to wash the truck. My wife said, well at least they played good for a half, and I said, they sure did. Moved on to watching a good game, and laughed my butt off while enjoying it. Arrowhead looked packed, so why would they change anything? |

You know, I think I enjoyed being a fan more before the internet. If the Chiefs won, it was great. If not, I was disappointed but shook it off pretty quickly. I wanted my team to win a Super Bowl but didn't wrap my identity up in the team or anything like that so I didn't get super pissed when they didn't get there.
Now, win or lose, every single move or play is analyzed and criticized. The internet has made football Serious Business and it's easy to get really wrapped up in it. I guess what I'm saying is that ignorance was bliss. |

I'm not nearly as fanatical as I was even 2 years ago. I've always been a Chiefs fan & can't see that ever changing. I'll either stop watching football or die before I would ever cheer for another team, but I hate the fact that i've become so numb to losing :banghead:

About 10 years after I became a Chiefs fan, I found out that my maternal grandfather played for the Redskins in the 50's (my mom is adopted and didn't have any contact with her real father until right before he died several years ago). I've thought several times about switching my fandom to the Redskins for family reasons but just can't do it. I guess I'm stuck with my bad girlfriend. :banghead:

If they fail to entertain, then I go elsewhere with my entertainment dollars. Simple business deal, kind of like when Neil Smith went to the Broncos for more pay and a shot at the Super Bowl. Nothing personal, just business. Kind of like TG spiking that football on us. Nothing personal, just business. |

We also both play fantasy, love it, and each bought into the Falcons offense improvements, so we each started our Falcons with confidence. And they all delivered. BTW, think KC will look MUCH improved next week vs Bills. |

If we beat either the Raiders, Chargers, or the Broncos at least once a season I'm happy. The Season when this doesn't happen is when I'll give up.
|
Gave up Week 3 last year.
Been having fun since. I put 25 percent of my attention on the Chiefs on Sundays. Rest on the rest of the league. |
We all settle in at the bar every Sunday and watch at least the first half of the Chiefs before moving on to the competitive teams that tend to play later in the day. The NFL is still exciting if you live in a city that has real teams. I don't root for any of them but it's great to be in a hub of professional sports excitement. I don't know how people do it living in KC. The ownerships of both teams just don't really seem to care.
Just look at the stands yesterday. Why would you think you're doing well when you can't sell out opening day? |

I started thinking about this yesterday and then again last night.
I've been a Chief fan for 38 long years. I've seen every game in person or on TV since 1989. Before that I listened to them on the radio when they didn't show them up here in northern Iowa and obviously before Directv/ST. Back in the 70's I would stay up to watch MNF just to catch one highlight of the Chiefs on the halftime show, if you were lucky. It seems crazy now that I can watch every game, that I would even fathom not watching them. But after I hear that the Chiefs simply weren't in the Manning sweepstakes because of money and then I see what I saw last night, it really makes me think, why am I watching? And at times feel like am I wasting my time? Because it sure doesn't feel like this franchise is putting everything into winning as much as I have the past almost 40 years. I had way more anger yesterday than good feelings that came out of my normal 12+ hours in the Man cave of watching Pre-game and actual games. I hated that the Chiefs lost, hated that the Broncos won, so what's the point really? I'm waiting for that one magical season from the Chiefs that may or may not happen. Will it all really be worth it? I know this, I think I'm addicted. If I tried not to watch football on Sunday I might go nuts, but when I do, I'm so angry most of the time (at the Chiefs) I'm crazy. I have literally watched every Sunday of football since I was 10 and this December I will be 48. It has consumed me and I don't know how to quit. |

He doesn't give a rats ass if they ever win a Championship as long as the Chiefs are in the top 5 in salary cap $ left. |

I gave up all hope after the 95 playoff loss to the Colts. This franchise will always be about the regular season and will never do shit in games that really count.

First, you come to grips with the immutable fact that no matter what happens, it doesn't have anything in the least to do with you. Nothing at all.
It's entertainment. It's not your identity. |
I don't know when you give up on being a fan but this guy did on Twitter to the Chiefs twitter account and got blasted.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ue-on-twitter/ I'm guessing the emplyee in question is now policing candy wrappers from the complex stairs? Chiefs apologize after telling fan to “get a clue” on Twitter Posted by Michael David Smith on September 12, 2012, 9:29 AM EDT http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.word...ium2.jpg?w=250 Getty ImagesWhen a longtime Chiefs fan named Travis Wright got frustrated by Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, he took to Twitter to declare that he couldn’t be much of a fan anymore, accusing owner Clark Hunt of being cheap and adding an obscenity. When the Chiefs employee who handles Twitter for the team saw that, he took umbrage and sent a private direct message to Wright, telling him to “get a clue.” That wasn’t very smart, because Wright posted the message on Reddit, where hundreds of people ripped the Chiefs for their poor fan relations. Eventually, the employee who runs the Chiefs’ Twitter (whose name hasn’t been released publicly) tweeted this apology: <a class="screen-name url" href="https://twitter.com/kcchiefs" data-screen-name="kcchiefs"> https://si0.twimg.com/profile_images...wg_normal.jpeg Kansas City ChiefsWright told KSHB in Kansas City that the Chiefs didn’t apologize to him personally, and they’ve blocked him from seeing their Twitter messages. “The funny thing about [the apology] is that I personally didn’t see it,” Wright said. “They didn’t apologize to me, they apologized to everyone else because of the backlash.” The incident is reminiscent of the time in 2008 when then-Browns General Manager Phil Savage responded to a critical e-mail from a fan by e-mailing him back and saying, “Go root for Buffalo-f#@* you-.” Team employees at all levels would be wise to learn that if a fan rips you online, you’re best off ignoring it. |

I don't think I watched more than a half dozen Chiefs games from the period when Stram was fired until Marty came in. They were never on local TV. The franchise is not quite that low, but its coming close. The Chiefs were in the playoffs three times in the last decade and were one of the winningest franchises in the 90s, though that came without playoff success.
The Chiefs went 15 years without getting to the playoffs and had only three winning seasons in between, an 8-6 campaign in 1972, 7-5-2 in 1973 and a 9-7 season in 1981. It was so bad they ran a wing-T because they had no receivers. A few years later they set franchise records for passing yards with a pathetic rush attack that could only average 3.2 ypc. I am going to go into each season now assuming they will suck. If they don't it will be gravy. It won't change as long as Clark Hunt signs the checks. |
For the last 42 years, I have been a loyal fan to the Chiefs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Washington Bullets (now Wizards).
This has sapped the strength and positivity out of me more times than I can remember rooting for and being a truly loyal fan to three teams that have sucked a lot more than they have been good. They have also rarely been in any championship, a total of 5 times since I started following them. That's 3 teams x 42 years = 126 team years with 5 appearances. THAT SUCKS! None of my friends follow any of these teams, only my brother follows the Pirates with me and not to the degree of me. So why am I still a fan? I am a loyal guy and stay to the bitter end, including jobs and companies I should have left long before the shit hit the fan. Stupidity? Stubbornness? Loyalty? I guess I don't like to be a fair weather friend. That is all....... |

When they hired Herm, I started missing more games and didn't care as much when I wasn't near a TV on Sunday afternoon...

In the past few years, I'll catch Chiefs games when I can... as far as financial support, my breaking point was last season. I had looked forward to that season for a couple of years and bought tickets to 5 games... after week 2, I sold the other 4 games and told myself I wouldn't pay to go to another game until after they proved they were contenders. No more potential bullshit. I was tempted to buy some tickets this year from a couple of people who offered them at a discount, but simply couldn't do it. And as far as the rest of the NFL, the weekly schedule simply doesn't appeal to me since I don't have Sunday Ticket. It's a quarterback league with a shortage of quarterbacks (even though that might be changing)... but, I still think the best of the NFL is pretty damn good, even though the bottom 2/3rds is mediocre at best and absolutely brutal at worst. This week I could spend some or all of my Sunday watching the Bills/Chiefs, Cowboys/Seahawks, Titans/Chargers, and 49ers/Lions (1/4  )... or take my pick of ~50 college football games that will be on TV or espn3. |

I love football, and the Chiefs are the only team I care about. I watch all their games, even if they do piss me off more than they make me happy.
As far as going to the games... well, at least tailgating, and spending time with family and friends is still worth it to me. I'm not a "true fan", I still think Cassel blows, and definitely don't hope for mediocrity, but I'm happier when we win. |
