I would take Vick, only as the back-up. I'm not crazy about the circus and I'm not a fan of him "personally" but he would be a quality back-up in Reid's system.

I'd think Reid would want a fresh start, bringing in new personnel, a new QB and tweaking his roster with fresh, young players. I don't think he'll want his old, has-been QB to come in and be a huge distraction.
Vick's about done anyway. His legs can't save him like they used to.
Reid's not above dumping older QB's for fresh talent anyway. See McNabb.

Vick is overrated. All that running around and all those wild throws? Even when Vick was in his prime, at the end of the game you woud be looking at 150 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, 2 TD's, a fumble and two interceptions.

JohnnyV13 01-04-2013 10:38 PM

Vick did realize his potential i 2010, but he's been too banged up since to really perform. Its sad that he didn't get his act together until just before his talent dried up. He might come to KC as a placeholder for a young QB---sort of like Warner in NY before Eli took over.

Of course, Warner had a nice last hurrah in AZ.

Jesus Christ! This all day errr day over Cassle and Quinn. Face it, Vick is head and shoulders above either one of those guys. The only issue I see with Vick is his durability. This past season Vick just couldn't stay healthy, and that cost the Eagles big time..

Some would call that a liability (to bring him in here)...But lets be honest. Compared to the current retreads we already have on roster, I think its well worth the risk. I personally don't want to see Cassel ever again on this team. HOWEVER, if he had to stay on the team, I wouldn't mind seeing him as a third string back up. Restructure Cassels contract and relegate him to third string. Thats about on par for his talent level imo.

1. Get Vick on the cheap for a couple years.
2. Draft Geno Smith.
3. ???????
4. Geno Smith learns the West Coast offense behind Vick for a year or two.
5. Profit.

I don't see any problem with that scenario.

Personally I don't care which FA QB he brings in as long as he drafts a QB to sit behind them. Vick would be exciting to watch while the kid gets ready.

I don't disagree. The only thing I would counter to that would be that Vick knows Reids Offensive system. This being a new team and all means that Vick could prove to be invaluable in terms of getting his offensive system installed in a more flawless manner. (less of a learning curve for the QB for instance) Obviously Vick would not be a long-term piece at QB for us. But he could be a great transitional piece that actually helps this team convert to a new offensive philosophy.

I don't have an issue with Alex Smith like a lot of people seem to have here. He has been in this league for several years now, and has invaluable NFL experience at QB. We won't win the Superbowl with Alex at the helm, but again, it comes down to transition. Draft Geno and let him sit for a year or two behind a proven NFL starter.

I love Kaepernick but I think SF will miss Alex' experience in the playoffs. Smith is as good as all 3 of our current QBs. We're a 10 win team w/him and Andy's play calling. 1 exciting year or 2 while our fresh draft pick waits. Cool.

Geno Smith is a better QB propsect than all but 2 or 3 of the QB prospects of the last 6-8 years.

Maybe Geno Smith. You do have a point, I just don't want Geno to learn from Vick. Geno might be able to start week 1, he's a smart kid and can pick up on things rather quickly. If we get Geno we don't need to worry to about veteran QB.

I wasn't entirely sold on Geno Smith to begin with... However, I do think he is the best QB in a bad draft class. I still think we should draft him or a stud OT.

I haven't followed college football all that much. How does he compare to Cam Newton?

He's a great college QB... I'm not denying that but so was Carr, Leaf, Leinart, Russell...the list goes on and on. There have been many college greats that flopped in the NFL! You just never know! So to assume we're gonna draft him and he's going to be ready to go come week 1 is stretching it, in my opinion.

I Will never cheer for Atlanta or Philadelphia ever again just because Vick played there.
I have been a Chief fan since the mid 60s, gone to more than 10 training camps, worn a KC Chiefs wrist watch daily for almost 15 years etc. etc. If Vick comes to KC I will never be a Chiefs fan again.

It makes me sad that people who post here would overlook Vick's deficient moral character and actually want him associated with our Chiefs. We should not sell our souls just to win football games. The price is too high.

Pin Head 01-04-2013 11:20 PM

First, it's that kind of thinking that has this team constantly wasting our time.

You can't achieve greatness if you are too ****ing scared to reach for it.

Second, these kids are far more NFL ready than they ever have been before, which is why there are so many young QBs succeeding in the NFL today.

Exactly. There have been equally, if not more, QB flops taken in the first round than not. Geno Smith could be the real deal in the pros. But I think a lot of peoples expectations are far too high. We've all been spoiled watching Newton, RGIII, Wilson, and Luck...I think they've ruined it for future draft classes. Geno has the tools to be a good NFL QB. How good has still yet to be seen. Again, he could pull a Cam Newton, or he could pull a Jamarcus Russell. Time will tell...then again, if we don't draft him, the point is moot anyways.

JohnnyV13 01-04-2013 11:27 PM

I fully expect Reid to get a veteran QB. If the rook can beat him out in camp, then great. If he can't, then you have a placeholder until the rook is ready. If the rook is never ready, you get another rook.

If that rook doesn't work out, you better polish your resume, because you're probably getting fired anyway, unless your placeholder turns into Rich Gannon.

What kind of thinking are you referring to? I'm being realistic when I'm saying I don't think he'll be ready to be an NFL starter in week one. I'm not saying don't draft the kid BUT I think he would be of more value if he spent a year or two learning the system rather than throw him out there when he most likely won't be ready.

Out of curiosity... have you followed Geno's performance this year or just watched highlights? I'm curious what you've seen in him that you would be glad to throw him out there as a starter game one.

Yep, sure have.

Tremendous accuracy and poise and awareness in the pocket. Additionally, he's been fearless in the face of pressure.

I'd start him week one and wouldn't think twice.

Yes, Ive watched his games.

Great pocket awareness, and extremely accurate, and the ability to esape pressure (which was constant) and keep his eyes downfield.

When he drives his hips through his passes, he has outstanding arm strength.

When he drives his hips through his passes, he has outstanding arm strength.

Would you bet your life on him being successful in his first year?

Yep, sure have.

Tremendous accuracy and poise and awareness in the pocket. Additionally, he's been fearless in the face of pressure.

I'd start him week one and wouldn't think twice.

He has several guys wide open downfield damn near everytime the ball is snapped. That's not gonna happen in the NFL. I have my doubts. Hope I'm wrong but I don't think he's for sure starter material yet based on his college performance. Time will tell. You just never know with these rookies.

Stupid question.

I am as confident in his ability as any QB that has come out in the last 6 or drafts, except Luck.

Go back and look at the last 6 or 8 drafts, you dipshit.

Okay here are the QB's for the last 8 drafts. You are saying that Geo Smith is better than 2-or 3 of these QB's?

Luck
RGIII
Tannehill
Weeden
Wilson
Foles
Cousin
Newton
Ponder
Locker
Bradford
Stafford
Ryan
Flacco
Rogers
Manning
Rothelsiberger
Rivers
Schuab

Yes, Ive watched his games.

Great pocket awareness, and extremely accurate, and the ability to esape pressure (which was constant) and keep his eyes downfield.

Well since none of us have a crystal ball handy, we'll just have to wait and see.

I am saying there are only 2 or 3 better prospects in that list when they came out.

I like him as a prospect better than all but Luck and and maybe Stafford and Manning.

I sure hope you are right.

I don't see it happening. Reid saw first hand the regression of Vick over the last two seasons. He will try to get a young franchise QB. Either via draft or trade.
