Reactions:

1) Trading for Alex Grbonossel is even more of a total f****ing waste, in my opinion. Daniel has the same strengths and limitations, and his upside as a starting QB is very similar. The Chiefs paid a high price to get Alex Grbonossel. Honestly, I would have rather taken a chance on signing Daniel and seeing if he can BECOME what Alex Grbonossel is than throwing those picks to San Fran.

2) The 0.2 percent chance that was left of drafting Geno Smith is completely gone. That would be more painful if I hadn't already made my peace with it two weeks ago.

Chase Daniel signing isn't bad, but its the move you make if you draft a guy at #1 not trading for a scrub like Alex Smith.

OmahaChief 03-12-2013 03:30 PM

I like this move as a back up QB. People can hate on Chase all they want but he was a winner and a gamer at Mizzou. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but I like a QB to be a bit cocky. He can sling the ball pretty well and has been learning from Brees which is not a bad thing.

In58men 03-12-2013 03:31 PM

Is Chase Daniel and Alex Smith suppose to be an upgrade? I don't see it.

In isolation, I could not care less that we've signed Daniel. The problem is that this damn near confirms what we're going to do at the top of the draft and goes a long way to damaging our ability to trade out of the pick with a shit show like Buffalo.

New Orleans' worst passing days were better than KC's best. They loved having Chase as their fall back option if Brees got injured. Luckily, that never happened, but I know quite a bit about this situation...Chase Daniel is ready for his own team. I promise you he isn't coming to KC to back up Alex Smith. Daniel is coming to QB this team. You will find no QB who is more driven and prepared than Chase Daniel. This is a great acquision by the Chiefs...whether you like Missouri or not.

I remember arguing with people post-Vermeil that wanted this team to just absolutely tank for 2-3 years to get high draft picks. Not that it's always bad ... but sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for too. There are plenty of poorly run organizations that sink to the bottom and struggle to get out, and other organizations who have no problem continuing to add talent despite drafting 20+ every year. Look where we are now.

We're right back to having to hope for getting incredibly lucky with a QB in rounds 2-7. Decent recent string of success in these rounds, league-wide, but this situation is discouraging to me.

Stanzi deserves to get a shot with the 2nd string. He has yet to show his potential. Constantly playing with the 3rd string and running for his life.

I think it has been a foregone conclusion what we were going to do with the top pick once we traded for Smith. Not many teams are going to draft QB as the first guy overall and sit him while he learns the ropes. I still think one of these teams is going to get desperate still and will make a move with us regardless.
