Be careful... Seems like I ALWAYS hit bad weather, no matter what time of the season I make the drive from Houston to KC, once I get north of Dallas. The trek through Oklahoma and lower Missouri is always problematic weather-wise...

Already have that much snow on the ground and below zero temperatures.

hearing it might be worse in Kansas, but we are just rolling slow and steady and getting through... Very carefully. Worst part of the drive is the Hobby Lobby trucks raging by like it is sunny and clear, dropping ice chunks on my car as they pass me. So many. I assume they are an Oklahoma company! Gotta get the tinsel and knitting supplies through the storm!

I'd say, 2 1/2 hr would usually mean x2 of that, which would be 5 hours, if you want to err on the safe side.

But if all your driving is on the interstate, it shouldn't be too bad, but it depends on where you live. If you're from say, Salina area, it shouldn't be too bad, until you reach Topeka onward to KC area.

I'm near the KCI airport, and it's not sleeting too bad here, just a little layer of ice, but nothing to be freaking out. But in the Jackson/Wyandotte/Johnson counties, they're getting some ice more than Platte County.

Coach 12-21-2013 02:09 PM

Edit:

Just now saw the radar, it is freezing rain/mix from Manhattan to KC. And it is starting to be on and off sleeting here in the KCI area.

Are they gettin slick....? It's an extended family Xmas party, so it's one I should show up to if the roads aren't THAT bad. I'm leaving around 4 if I go...

ciaomichael 12-21-2013 04:33 PM

TWC is saying 6" to 10" now for the KC area. Radar shows snow all the way back to Dodge City and moving northeast.

bevischief 12-21-2013 04:39 PM

I least you can drive on snow. Too cold for ice.

ShortRoundChief 12-21-2013 04:43 PM

Nothing but ice this way. Ugh, powers going out in places and it's not even dark yet.

The great news is that I have to work 16 hours tomorrow and the person who was watching my son lost their power so they had to skip town.

Yeah, Pittsburg is right in the ice zone, with another band moving in soon. Tulsa got slammed earlier.

Pittsburg is a great town, by the way. Frontenac is really nice too. I heard the Paluka's store was up for sale - do you know if it ever sold?

I don't know for sure. I was in there this summer but I heard something about the old man dying here recently so I don't know what's going on with it. I live on the south part by the college so I rarely venture into frontenac though.

We have a small sheet of ice and snow on the roads here. Good thing I work 9-7 tonight. Last night our shift worked five accidents. A lot more than normal for our shift. The accident I worked the idiot blew a .21, slid off the road.

Bowser 12-21-2013 06:28 PM

Apparently there was a fatality in the Northland on US-152 and N. Indiana. Guy slid off the road in a pickup and was killed when he was thrown from the vehicle.

TLO 12-21-2013 07:04 PM

Sheets of freezing rain coming down in North KC. Looks like it will switch over to all snow in an hour or so.

Just took my Subaru for a quick spin. The roads are iced over pretty good out here. I saw people sliding and spinning their tires all over the place. I just went to Panda Express and came straight home. Hopefully it switches over to all snow soon.

The joys of owning a Mustang. I've been there man. My 96 Cobra made close to 320hp at the wheels I couldn't even get traction in the rain. LMAO

mike_b_284 12-21-2013 08:24 PM

to tell the truth I miss this weather. I love driving around in the middle of the night when it is pouring snow, no one out but the plows. Running the snowblower and watching the dog go nuts.

underEJ 12-21-2013 08:30 PM

Made it into midtown fine. The only problems are hills with no salt (major roads seem fine,) and people who don't slow down early enough before a stop. Took about two hours longer than usual to drive from Wichita to KC. Had to stop once to smash the ice off my headlights, but that was kind of fun! Safe travels everyone heading out.

Mojo Jojo 12-21-2013 08:31 PM

There are a couple of hills in my sub division...some cars struggling to get up them.

bad ass is all i have to say. Zero problems while other people couldn't even get moving from a dead stop through an intersection. I wasn't a moron driving fast because of 4x4, but it was amazing.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. It's kind of funny but scary too, because it's moving slowly enough for you to think you need to do something to protect your house, but too quickly to make it to Home Depot and back with some plywood or something. Creepy.

That is cool to watch...bet it could do some major property damage though. How do you stop that? Or do you just leave and contact the insurance company afterward?

It did do some major damage. If you look around, there's other videos about it. Just happened last week. I saw one where it literally tore through part of somebody's house. It looks slow and all, but it's solid ice...

Normally, you would step your yard down with a concrete wall or rock retaining wall a little wider than your house, the bigger the better. Most walls are only designed to stop small flows though so at some point if it doesn't pile up on the wall and divert it around the sides of your house, you're just ****ed. Large trees planted close and at an angle might divert the flow, but sometimes you just can't win and accept the fact you live on the edge of a large ****ing ice machine.

I stayed in a native cabin North East of Lake Winnipeg that had holes drilled into the yard/rock in a triangle with a point nearest the lake. They had a storage shed with What looked like 3' walls made out of old Aluminum concrete forms with legs. When it starts you pull the little man hole covers off the holes and drop the posts on the walls into the holes. I've only been there in the summer, but they had pictures of it funneling the flow around both sides of the cabin.

They are loving it.

GloucesterChief 01-24-2014 08:19 AM

Really icy here in Houston. Mostly because they didn't pre-salt the roads to prevent ice from forming over night. If this happened where I used to live (NoVA) they wouldn't of canceled anything because this sort of weather is normal.

Coach 02-02-2014 10:22 PM

Tuesday (2/4) isn't looking good. Projected to get between 6-10" of snow in the KC area. Will be submitting a day off request for Tuesday, as I'd rather want to stay home all day, than have to go drive anywhere in this storm.
