Prayers for you, your Father and your entire family.

HemiEd 05-01-2014 03:22 PM

Prayers to you, your father and your entire family Donger. It is one of those toughest times in life.

I can really sympathize, as my Father has been under hospice care now for over two months. He is fighting his ass off as I am sure your father will as well.

Donger 05-11-2014 07:53 AM

Hi everyone. Well, after many tests (MRI, CAT, PET), they haven't found any other cancer in my Dad's body. You have to love doctors; they almost seemed disappointed that there wasn't any.... They said that if the lesions on his brain were secondary, they would be able to treat them with radiation. Since it appears the lesions are the primary, he has to have surgery to go after them.

So, he goes under the knife on Tuesday. If you would, please see a prayer, send good thoughts and so on to my Dad that day.

Thank you all for your empathy. It means a lot to me.

Donger.

Sully 05-11-2014 07:55 AM

I wish you, your family and your father all the best in his fight with this illness.

htismaqe 05-11-2014 10:06 AM

Prayers for you and your family, Donger.

We just last week lost my wife's dearest uncle to brain cancer. I carried him to bed last Thursday night (I carried a 71-year old man like I would have one of my kids) and he told me good night. He died on Friday.

At this point, I would take it as good news that they didn't find any other cancer. I don't want to scare you but his ordeal started in almost exactly the same way - we thought he had a stroke. In 2 days, they had found 4 tumors in his brain. Where his story diverges though is that it only took them a week to find 2 more tumors in his lungs, where the cancer originated. It doesn't appear that your Dad has that issue, so keep your hopes up.

I can also give you some other good news - modern brain cancer techniques appear to be amazing. They gave Ronnie 6 weeks to live when he was diagnosed. That was 21 months ago.

With good doctors, prayers, and some luck, your Dad is gonna live a long, long time yet.

Hope it went well, today. Thoughts are with you.

ndws 05-13-2014 02:29 PM

I know what you are going through. I'm pretty close with my old man. He's 72, and after a routine bypass near Christmas, we nearly lost him to some extremely bizarre events. Before that it was lung cancer that was diagnosed during screens for something else, a number of years before that, prostate cancer.

Things can look pretty bleak, but sometimes it turns out good too. Hopefully you get good news out of all of this too. Thoughts and prayers your way Donger.

seclark 05-13-2014 02:39 PM

Praying that the surgery went well...

Eleazar 05-14-2014 10:20 AM

Good luck. Had one of my parents go through something similar. I hope that you have a good outcome.

I felt a lot better after talking with the brain surgeon every morning when he did his rounds. He was one of those people that is so expert in his field that you're just in awe of him. He will be in good hands, I bet.

Donger 05-16-2014 08:32 AM

Hi Everyone:

Thanks again for the good wishes and prayers. My Dad survived the surgery and has already been discharged. We are now waiting on the pathology. His surgeon could only get to one of the lesions because he was concerned that if he went after both, my Dad could have bled out. So, he went after the larger one. Oddly, he's not entirely convinced that it is cancer after all. He said it could be an infection or even fungus (yes, I've had some fun with the old man about that possibility...) although that might even be worse than cancer, as I've learned.

Anyway, now we wait again.

Again, my most sincere thanks to all for your empathy.

Donger.

htismaqe 05-16-2014 08:34 AM

Glad everything seems to be going well. Please keep up us updated, we'll keep up the prayers.

Great to hear the surgery went well and that he's already home. Hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about.

Sully 05-16-2014 10:11 AM

I wqas just thinking this morning that i hoped a long absence didn't mean bad news. I'm glad t know things are, at least for the time being, stabilized.

Dave Lane 05-16-2014 10:31 AM

70 is way too young. Hopefully the Doctors were able to do something to cure him permanently.

Donger 05-19-2014 09:14 PM

Hello:

Unfortunately, the prognosis came back today and both are cancerous tumors. Stage 4. My Dad will begin aggressive radiation therapy and chemotherapy shortly. I spoke with him earlier, and I've never heard fear in my Dad's voice, until today. A brave face, yes, but mortal fear.

I hesitate to ask again, but if you would, please say a prayer or send good wishes to my father.

Thank you.

Donger

Perineum Ripper 05-19-2014 09:16 PM

Sorry to hear that..hopefully the radiation and chemo work..good luck to your dad and your family

Bugeater 05-19-2014 09:18 PM

Thoughts and prayers for you and your dad. Stay positive and upbeat around your dad. That may help as much as the therapy.

Good wishes for your father, and good wishes to you and your family looking out for your father. You hang in there.

patteeu 05-19-2014 09:39 PM

No reason to hesitate. Best wishes for your dad, you, and the rest of his loved ones.

I've never understood why the surgeons aren't more aggressive when they encounter these things. Personally, I'd rather take the chance of bleeding out on the table than have them close me up for radiation. Although in this case, I recognize that they weren't absolutely sure it was malignant.

BigRedChief 05-19-2014 09:44 PM

Positive thoughts heading your way for your Dad, you and the family.

Sorry to hear about the cancer diagnosis. Best wishes to you and your family, you're in my thoughts.

Praying for you, your family, and your father's doctors. Since i've never been through something similar, I can imagine, but can't truly know what you are going through. But it sounds terrifying and sad. I'll also pray that you can be a bright spot in your family's fear and worries, and that someone can be that for you.

htismaqe 05-20-2014 07:22 AM

Donger, did they ever find cancer in his lungs or elsewhere?

If they didn't, there's still reason to have considerable hope.

He could still live a few years with Stage 4 brain cancer, given the treatments they have now. Directed radio therapy (aka "cyberknife") worked very, very well for my wife's uncle. Unfortunately, he also had lesions in one of his lungs and that is what got him.

bevischief 05-20-2014 08:33 AM

Done.

I'm sorry that I somehow overlooked this thread for so long. I'm even more sorry to hear about what is going on. My best wishes and thoughts to you and your family.

I suspect we are alot alike -- I have a small circle of close friends, but mainly it's my immediate family that I'm close to. While I wasn't as close to my parents as you obviously are, dealing with their health issues years ago was very difficult and certainly brought starkly home that you should appreciate everything that you have now, because it can certainly change quickly on very short notice.

Again, my very best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery for your old man.

Should I start some kind of history thread to take your mind off the worrying? :D

frankotank 05-20-2014 12:51 PM

Thanks everyone. It means a lot to me.

No, they haven't found cancer anywhere else in his body, although I suspect that he isn't telling us everything. He's a bit obstinate and most definitely suffers from the British "keep a stiff upper lip" syndrome.
