Lighting. And what you're viewing it on matters.

It's not hard to see it as both because the lighting is so terrible.

If you look at the top of the dress where the vest is you get a white coat/dress and a brownish/gold trim.

Now move down a bit to where the hips would be and look at the background to the left of the dress that is "properly lit" and look at the black/white cloth.

I still can't figure out wtf lighting or setting her camera was on to make that royal blue look that light.

It's just overexposed.

Got myself to finally see the white/gold briefly by focusing in on the top. Quickly changed back to blue/black though. From all the reactions, it seems like geezers are around 90/10 in favor of white/gold. Color sensitivity change as we get older?

I don't think anybody is disputing the fact that the photo was manipulated for this purpose. It's just crazy how successful they were in creating such a divide. We know it's not a magical dress.

Im trying to force myself to see the White and Gold. Im going to have to view this from every PC and mobile device in my house once i get home.

Actually, I was wondering that myself. If it's an acuity thing related to low light, maybe that skill goes down as we age.

I've looked at this pic and its gold and white in every scenario to me.
I angled my phone. Looked at it in light and dark rooms. Stared at it for a minute.
Gold and white. Everytime.

I guess I don't get it. I see it every time as Blue and a dark brown or almost black. i so have a slight color blindness issue though.

I looked at it most of the morning on and off. I saw Black and Blue. Now I am seeing white and gold. Freaky.

My girlfriend and I have been looking at the same pictures... I only see black and blue and she only sees white and gold.

...the pic is overexposed and there is so much white light that the dark blue mixed with the reflecting blue light(sky) the dark blue turns to white/blue... like the black in the light appears brown... Brown and blue make black..

it's a photography error, but I also imagine there is a sheer or sheen to the material...

I can also magically make the OP change from white/gold to blue/black by shifting focus between these two pics a few times and then going back to the OP... and if I focus on something else for a second it'll go back. So, maybe I was looking at darker backgrounds or something earlier when it changed to blue/black. :shrug:

OP was white/gold at first, then someone responded with the image as blue/black. So I scrolled back up to compare it to the OP but the OP had changed to blue/black. Thought he edited the image and inserted the blue/black one or something, but I guess not.

Yeah, I saw blue this morning, still see blue now. It's never changed for me. My wife and one of my kids see white. The other 2 kids see blue as well. The rods and cones explanation makes perfect sense to me.

I think I must be the only one to see it as muddy gold and light blue. Was that color before and still is.

Light blue and gold I would have preferred an option for but I picked blue and black because that's what was available and I didn't want to choose Gaz. But the dress could be either of the other two due to lighting or using Photoshop color adjustments.

Interesting that the picture is without a doubt one set of shades that people see, and the actual dress is without a doubt a different set of shades that other people also see.

She picture just looks very over exposed/washed out. The background is blasted out even more. Since it's lighter than the dress, it may have been back lit, darkening the color of the dress being in shadow. If someone ran Curves or Levels or Shadow-Highlight it could have washed out the real color. But if they saturated the color after that, it would restore the cobalt blue more.

I think it's a bullshit trick and you're all being had.
