Stupid bastard eye trickery.

White and gold last night. Damn sure it's blue and black now.

KChiefs1 02-27-2015 11:40 AM

Black & blue.

Graystoke 02-27-2015 12:06 PM

What?
It was white and gold just a second ago. Now black and blue

Lighting. And what you're viewing it on matters.

jd1020 02-27-2015 12:11 PM

It's not hard to see it as both because the lighting is so terrible.

If you look at the top of the dress where the vest is you get a white coat/dress and a brownish/gold trim.

Now move down a bit to where the hips would be and look at the background to the left of the dress that is "properly lit" and look at the black/white cloth.

I still can't figure out wtf lighting or setting her camera was on to make that royal blue look that light.

Katipan 02-27-2015 12:19 PM

It's just overexposed.

http://www.today.com/health/dress-bl...why-2D80518444

Quote:

In this case, it’s probably because the image is overexposed, experts said.

“Based on what I have been able to gather from the internet, the image is of a blue/black dress that has been significantly overexposed resulting in its general white/gold impression,” says Mark Fairchild, director of the Program of Color Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

“The blue and black are reflecting enough light to scale up to white and gold with the overexposure. What little you can see of the background shows this overexposure (and that overexposure has been digitally enhanced in some versions floating around the internet).”
OH OH OH

Quote:

“The second, and more important explanation, in this case, is through a perceptual mechanism we call ‘discounting the illuminant’. Humans perceive object colors based on the light coming from the object and their understanding of the illumination falling on the object. If we are tricked somehow and make the wrong interpretation of illumination then we perceive the colors of objects incorrectly.”
You people don't understand light.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 02-27-2015 12:21 PM

Got myself to finally see the white/gold briefly by focusing in on the top. Quickly changed back to blue/black though. From all the reactions, it seems like geezers are around 90/10 in favor of white/gold. Color sensitivity change as we get older?

I don't think anybody is disputing the fact that the photo was manipulated for this purpose. It's just crazy how successful they were in creating such a divide. We know it's not a magical dress.

ToxSocks 02-27-2015 12:23 PM

Im trying to force myself to see the White and Gold. Im going to have to view this from every PC and mobile device in my house once i get home.

I must see the white and gold!

Actually, I was wondering that myself. If it's an acuity thing related to low light, maybe that skill goes down as we age.

Jim Lahey 02-27-2015 01:53 PM

I've looked at this pic and its gold and white in every scenario to me.
I angled my phone. Looked at it in light and dark rooms. Stared at it for a minute.
Gold and white. Everytime.

Gonzo 02-27-2015 02:12 PM

I guess I don't get it. I see it every time as Blue and a dark brown or almost black. i so have a slight color blindness issue though.

Literally, THOUSANDS if not MILLIONS of people.

Judging from that, I'd say white and brown.

...the pic is overexposed and there is so much white light that the dark blue mixed with the reflecting blue light(sky) the dark blue turns to white/blue... like the black in the light appears brown... Brown and blue make black..

it's a photography error, but I also imagine there is a sheer or sheen to the material...

I must be getting old, I'm totally confused.

OP was white/gold at first, then someone responded with the image as blue/black. So I scrolled back up to compare it to the OP but the OP had changed to blue/black. Thought he edited the image and inserted the blue/black one or something, but I guess not.

always seen it blue/black, even when they bend the contrast and tone to extreme measures.. can still tell it's blue/black. Been debunked a million times by now that it is blue anyways, not sure why this went viral

Shaid 02-27-2015 10:36 PM

Yeah, I saw blue this morning, still see blue now. It's never changed for me. My wife and one of my kids see white. The other 2 kids see blue as well. The rods and cones explanation makes perfect sense to me.

This. The actual dress may be blue and black. But the photo this white and gold. I opened the image in Photoshop and clicked the eye dropper on the colors and they are white (actually a really really really light blue. More a blue tinted white) and gold

I don't believe you did this. I just did the same, and it's definitely blue and dark grey/black.

Though my eyes see it as white and gold, I'll admit, I understand that it's actually blue and black.

KChiefs1 12-21-2015 02:31 PM

There was only one time when I saw it and it was white and gold. I blinked and it went back to black and blue.

Chief Pagan 12-21-2015 04:09 PM

I think I must be the only one to see it as muddy gold and light blue. Was that color before and still is.

BucEyedPea 12-21-2015 04:47 PM

Light blue and gold I would have preferred an option for but I picked blue and black because that's what was available and I didn't want to choose Gaz. But the dress could be either of the other two due to lighting or using Photoshop color adjustments.

Interesting that the picture is without a doubt one set of shades that people see, and the actual dress is without a doubt a different set of shades that other people also see.

BucEyedPea 12-21-2015 05:29 PM

She picture just looks very over exposed/washed out. The background is blasted out even more. Since it's lighter than the dress, it may have been back lit, darkening the color of the dress being in shadow. If someone ran Curves or Levels or Shadow-Highlight it could have washed out the real color. But if they saturated the color after that, it would restore the cobalt blue more.

I think it's a bullshit trick and you're all being had.
