It's like he doesn't have much else to say but keep to his talking points. I think that's what drives most people bonkers.

All in all he's just a super-average PBP guy - but only when he's not caught up in his preferred narrative-loop.

He is the Rerun of PBP guys in other words.

gblowfish 10-28-2015 03:46 PM

I listened to Ryan and Denny last night and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a lot calmer, and since it was an epic, historic game, it was great to hear Denny's call. I have a feeling if the Royals win it all, he may hang it up after this year.

Joe Buck wants to hold Andy Reid accountable for Alex Smith as well?

That it didn't know.

Baby Lee 10-28-2015 04:15 PM

I think the Joe Buck situation is an accumulation

He's a nepotism hire
He's a shadow of his father
He has a hateable face
He and Aikman in the booth together look like the centerfold for 'Blue Boy' magazine
He screams 'sure I went to boarding school, but I can hang at your frat party'
He goes prudish in high profile settings [Moss' 'absolutely disgusting' TD celebration].
His praise is easy to tune out and his criticism is like nails on a chalkboard.

None of them in themselves make him the worst announcer on earth. But each one gives the viewer a unique and legitimate hook to hang their hate on, and it festers and festers, then comedians make fun of him, then Artie Lange destroys his HBO show, and before you know it he's a pariah.

NJChiefsFan 10-28-2015 04:23 PM

I actually don't have a major problem with Joe Buck. I do have an issue with a lot of sports commentators so I do get why people don't like him and how it affects them. Harrold Reynolds has been getting on my nerves lately with his over-analysis and trying to find stuff that isn't there. Everyone else on MLB network I love.

Mennonite 10-28-2015 04:42 PM

He's a smug prick. 1980s teen movie villain level of douchbaggery.

Mama Hip Rockets 10-28-2015 04:58 PM

Here's how Joe Buck announces an at-bat:

"
Ball one
The 1-0 pitch
Ball two
Here's the 2-0
(foul ball) A tremendous swing by Daniel Murphy. Wow. What a swing. He reeeeally got a hold of that one. Just an incredible swing. (notice he doesn't mention at any point that the ball was foul)
The 2-1
Strike two
The 2-2
And here's a groundout...Oh wait...He's safe.
"

In summary, here are my main complaints about Joe Buck:
1) He states the current count before every pitch, but offers no other commentary or description of the pitches during the at-bat.
2) He goes absolutely nuts about foul balls. All the time. Like, pretty much every inning he talks about how great a swing was on a foul ball. But he rarely says that the ball was foul. If I was just listening and not watching, I would think people were hitting doubles or home runs based on his praise of the swing.
3) He assumes outs. He calls "ground outs" and "fly outs" etc. and says "to end the inning" well before the play is over. I've heard him do this on multiple occasions.

I listened to the stream until the 9th inning when I turned on the TV. I agree that this was pretty nice. I love the tension of post season baseball as much as the next guy, but I don't need to work myself into a stress knot.

EPodolak 10-28-2015 05:34 PM

Joe Buck's mash note to Madison B. last year was nauseating. Other than that I don't mind him or pay too much attention to his personality.

Joe Buck is the typical corporate attention whore who will always selectively spin comments to favor the larger markets. Most of what he says might have its own form of accuracy, but it's obvious he's looking at market size when he decides to get happy and say nice things. And he's a St. Louis homer, so there's that too.

So he's a whore and a St. Louis homer too. IOW, a piece of shit. And I hope his wide is ****ing hobos when he's out being the anti-KC dickhead he is...

I've listened to him plenty. What I meant by he calls the game like any other announcer is: he calls the play by play, rattles off some stats, talks about the players playing in the game, tells a story, asks the other guys what they think, cracks a joke, takes us to commercial, etc. I'm also not a moron, I just have a different take.

Sorce 10-28-2015 10:02 PM

After listening tonight I think it's more about the Royals having a star for him to obsess over more than anything. He just doesn't dwell on us enough because he doesn't have one person to focus on. The one guy we got is Davis and he's in for an inning or two max. I don't think he's as biased as people make him out to be, I just thing he's a terrible announcer with an even worse staff.

Kman34 10-28-2015 10:04 PM

Reynolds was far worse during the first 6 tonight.

I ****ing hate Joe Buck and Fox in general. All he does is try to create stories instead of letting the game tell the story. That and try to be smart, clever, and funny while failing miserably at all of those things

Since NBC has Costas and Al Michaels I wish they would get it

Someone mentioned that in the GDT the other night, that basically every fanbase except the Cardinals thinks Joe Buck hates their team.

He does have a way of focusing too much on story lines and focusing on players.

I've never minded him much in the past, but him and Reynolds have been kind of annoying this series... and maybe more Reynolds, actually. Last night it was "So, is this who Murphy is now?"... the other night, Reynolds was going on about how hard it is to defend at the K and last night he made a dumb comment about how the Royals must have been stealing signs or something (I think he was just trying to explain how awesome the Royals are and kind of failed). There have been a few other things, too.

Did Harold Reynolds give Frank White back the gold glove he stole from him?

tk13 10-29-2015 12:02 PM

Yeah if you read the internet, most all non-Royals fans are sick of the national media talking about how great the Royals contact hitting is. If this keeps up, the way people were making fun of Bumgarner last year, this year it'll be how Joe Buck loves the Royals hitters.

I'd agree that Gus Johnson is fun for something like March Madness, but he really wouldn't be a good fit for baseball. He's really not as good at calling a game as other national guys. He's just good at yelling. I think guys like Kevin Harlan are actually much better announcers at calling the action.

Eleazar 10-29-2015 01:05 PM

Gus Johnson needs to keep calling college hoops or the AFL or something and stay away from things people care about being called seriously.

For a few years he was the main play-by-play guy for the MLB International feed... the one we got to hear in game 1 when FOX went down. Sometimes when you see old World Series highlight films you'll hear clips of his calls.

I saw Colin Cowherd's rant the other day. It was slightly funny, but not accurate. He said that everyone hates Buck, but loves their own guys. I've seen plenty of people on here ripping the Royals announcers. On another note, Cowherd called Hosmer "Hasmer." He sucks too.

RobBlake 10-29-2015 11:40 PM

The broadcasters voice certainly paints the game and creates a certain "color" to the game... they are key for an enjoyable experience... with that said.. i miss madden after hearing these other guys
