I dumped the coals into my smoker around 9:30 and checked periodically on the temp. Apparently the cookie sheets got extremely hot and caught the side on fire. Like I said, I did this several times. I ****ed up and should have removed the sheets back into the apartment. |

Get everything wet you can out of there. If you don't, expect mold to grow rapidly. If you have a dehumidifier handy, use it 24/7 at least for a week. The smell from smoke will take some time to go away. Simple Febreeze works best.
Most important thing though is getting anything wet out. Mold sets in, total refurbishment will need to be done. You might be paying for a remodel anyway. |
Y'know, we're all jumping to conclusions here. How do we know that his apartment doesn't always look like that, and he's just referring to a barbecue sauce spill on the carpet or something?

Atleast no one was hurt, and you still have your Bose stereo to boot
My mom has one, outstanding depth of sound |

And if that complex didn't have a no BBQ policy before this, it surely does now.
Can't have nice things there anymore! |

I didn't know if it was serious OP or not - at first. Glad everyone is okay!
|
I'm glad it wasn't worse than it could have been. Hang in there dude, thankfully you had some friends and family to help you. Everyone ****s up, think of it as in the past and move on as best you can.
|
Oh hell. Sucks man. Glad everyone is OK.
|
I'm not being a dick - but was the meat good?
|
This is my biggest fear using a smoker.

Feel free to blame this one on Smith; I think you can get a pass this time! |

You'll land on your feet Inmem, had a very scary incident of my own recently that will cost me dearly
We may not be British, but keep calm and a stiff upper lip anyway |
Good Luck Inmen. Glad everyone is healthy and safe. Hope you find a place you like soon.
|
Hope you have renters insurance and everyone is OK....
Uggghhh man... |
I hate to ask what you paid for a living room that size...glad it didn't escalate into other apartments
Be thankful. |
Still own a TV with those fat backs?
|
No
He caught his shit on fire than afterwards decided the first step to recovery would be dragging a projection tv into apartment. |
Looks like the tennant of the year award is gone.
|
Hang in there Inmem
Glad you're safe |
Glad your family is ok... That's what's important...
|
|
Hmmm, well I'm glad you're alright, but I have to admit this entered my mind after seeing the picture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8D4AsLzlM0

This is how I had my chimney starter. This caused the fire with no coals inside. Just the heat going through the cookie sheets to the wood.

You will be more cautious than ever now. I had a fire start out of a cigarette butt can. Everytime i thought i smelled smoke i would run around and check the decks. Glad you and your family are okay and the loss was minimal. RIP Pork Butt

Yes, hence the reason I said if he were some beloved member of this board, people would be reacting differently. I'm not here to white knight for Inmem. I just think it's classless. I'd be saying the same thing if it was you in his position. It's one thing to make jokes when it's a news story and no one knows the people involved. It's another thing entirely, IMO, when it's a member of our little community here. We disagree. That's fine. I dropped it. |

I think you're correct. How I read it, too. |
I had a spare coal stick in the bottom of my chimney starter once, then drop onto the deck once it burned down small enough to fit through the grate on the bottom. Found a baseball size hole in my deck the next morning. Lucky it wasn't worse I guess.

I'm still stunned that cool-down setup didn't work. |
I use a BGE on a wood deck at my condo. I cleared it with the HOA before I bought the place. That said, I never use a chimney out there, just those lighter squares. Takes longer to heat up, but the piece of mind is worth it.
|
According to post 86 he had coals in the chimney on top of the cookie sheet resting on the deck.i think the coals brought the wood up to the ignition point but the fire just didn't become visible until after he dumped the coals into the smoker.
Coals in the chimney get incredibly hot. One time my chimney blew a chunk of concrete out of my driveway. |

It's a miracle he hadn't burned his place down before yesterday using that method. |

Inmem, sorry to hear about your loss, but at least no one was hurt. The mess can be cleaned up, and I suspect you'll be grilling again soon......just maybe not with a chimney.

In all seriousness, you're insanely lucky that yesterday was your first incident. Glad everyone is OK, things can be replaced - people can't.

I'm still unsure about the process that caused this fire; would Demonpenz MS paint the proceedings, please?

I knew the hospital shouldn't have let that dude leave with a kid.

Inmem did you find new digs yet or hotel I cant imagine in Cali finding a new place is a quick and easy process. Regardless think your lucky stars that the fire wasn't slower to develop and erupt in the night while everyone was sleeping. In all I think your a good dude and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. As for the ribbing I have always thought you had a pretty good sense of humor and if tables turned you would fire off a round too. I will be praying for you and your family to get a sense of home again soon and lives back to normal.
Oh and if your living in a van down by the river please please keep the Weber a minimum of 50 feet from the fuel tank! |
