Riding out the storm in Miami where it won't be too bad.
Stay safe for those up in Palm Beach and north... it looks like you'll get the worst of this. |
|
We decided to squat at her folks house about 10 miles further inland right on the Palm Beach/Martin county line. Helped put up the shutters last night and this morning. I'll keep the Planet posted as I am able. Stay safe everyone else. Thanks for the well wishes...

What a great day to be working by the beach tomorrow. Should be very interesting out.
|
I have a brother that lives in Cocoa he sent his wife and kid inland upstate and his dumb ass is staying. No idea why, its not like there is anything you can do.

Either way, hopefully he stays safe. |

Take anything irreplaceable like pics and stuff with you. |

But yeah, no need to ride that out. |

The storm surge is usually what kills people in these storms. |
Here is an interesting article on how hurricanes get their name. It use to be all female names but apparently women were getting offended at that so now it is male and female names.
The names rotate every six years so the same name could pop up every six years. The exception to that rule is if the hurricane is determined to be particularly damaging are retired for legal and historical reasons. For example, the use of the name Katrina was retired in 2005 following the devastating impact that Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans. http://earthsky.org/earth/how-do-hur...et-their-names |

It really is scary how fragile our infrastructure is and how much we all depend upon it.
Anyone remember the 9/11 thread on here? All the while it was going on I was thinking to myself, "What if these dumb bastards would be smart enough to fly those planes into a nuclear or electric energy generation plant or a dam?" |
The people that stay might similar to weird people in KS (me) when there is a tornado warning. I don't go down into my basement, I sit outside by the barn or just inside, to watch. Mother Nature is awesome.
If it's at night, that can be a bit unnerving. The local radio is very good at reporting. Our county has a bunch of storm trackers. They give classes 2x a year for normal folks as well. I will take a tornado over a hurricane. There are pro's and con's to both. Hurricanes don't surprise you. They are huge. I guess the only hope is that they lose power or that the brunt is a few miles away? Tornados can hop and skip. The chance of getting whacked is similar as to shark bites in the sea. Or as the Artillery Man would say "big sky, little bullet". The biggest scare would be an F-5 tornado bearing down on your town at night. |
Hurricanes can spawn m multiple tornadoes though

New Orleans was taken down by A Cat 3 hurricane. This one is stronger, it's a Cat 4 hurricane. Glad to see you are taking it seriously. Wish some others were. |
It's not THAT the wind is blowing. It's WHAT the wind is blowing.

With that said, Stay safe Florida. |

It's been 4000+ days since a hurricane has hit land in the USA. You get days of warning and they can predict pretty accurately where it's going ashore and clear out. |
If I had to choose for a tornado or hurricane I'd pick a tornado too. Much higher chance I am personally unaffected by one than a hurricane which would touch everything in town.
|
It's been windy with cloud cover here all day. Nice change from the blistering heat we've had all summer

Karma is a bitch. It looks like a nice blood red cell is gonna hit my area soon. Salina is getting blasted, Manhattan in 30 min.
KC might get the perfect storm. One set of cells going east along I-70 with another travelling NE up the I-35 corridor. Looks like they meet in KC. Tornado Warning until 9:00 pm |

Edit: I'm hoping anyway |

With it being a bit stormy and gloomy here in KC with storms on the way it actually gives the sensation that the hurricane is on its way here.
|
Well it appears that it is going to be down to a Cat 3 hurricane by the time it reaches the Jacksonville area. Not that it lessens the concern but that means the sustained winds will be less.

My wife's uncle was planning to ride it out until this morning. They live on a barrier island in Melbourne.
Thankfully, they changed their minds after the cops drove through their neighborhood telling everyone to GTFO. |
What's the reason to risk staying behind? There's nothing you can do when it happens right?

Update, 8:10 p.m.: Hurricane Matthew is now officially a Category 4 storm, which means its winds are reaching speeds between 140 and 165 mph. The storm may even soon reach Category 5 status—the most dangerous level at which hurricanes are classified—and hurricane warnings have been issued for cities as widely spread as Palm Beach, Orlando (which is about 40 miles inland of the Atlantic) and Savannah, Georgia.** Matthew's death toll in the Caribbean now stands at an estimated 113, including 108 deaths in Haiti. |

If you stay behind and a hurricane makes a direct hit, it is a mistake you won't make again (assuming you are lucky enough to survive). Me and my family stayed in our home in South Miami Dade during Hurricane Andrew and we spent an entire night sheltering in a bathtub as our house was being ripped apart. I won't be making that mistake again. |
Sorry the video goes to Facebook but help to restore power is on the way. Long line of electrical repair trucks on the way to the coasts.
