If a celebrity is approached by a kid, who obviously looks up to that celebrity as a role model then I think that they should make the kid's day by getting a picture with them.
If it's anyone that has hit puberty, then no, respect the celebs privacy. They're just people. |
I somehow seem to run into Will Shields about once a year. Never asked for a photo or autograph, but I've said hello a few times and commented on the Chiefs or Nebraska. Once was shortly after his HOF induction and he seemed to appreciate the congratulations. He starting telling me how he was so busy he's looking forward to going back when he's not the center of attention. I've seen other people chat him up and he seemed really patient and friendly with everyone.

I would not know most of the players unless they had their jerseys on.
|
I worked in the mobile department at Best buy in Tiffany Springs and sold Dontari Poe a Sonos subwoofer and soundbar. I didn't notice him until he had questions and I was the closest guy. I don't want to bother athletes, but he was really nice. Alcides Escobar came by one time and some of our employees were all over him, I think it shows a lack of dignity personally.
|
I might have said hello or congratulations and left the man alone.
Have you ever talked with a player or former player over dinner or a beer? I have, and they talk about it the same way you might after a bad day at work. That was one of the first things I noticed, they didn't say "I had practice today" it's "today at work xyz" |
You did the right thing, personally I think the only time a celebrity should be accessible is when they're representing their work in any fashion.
|
Back in the late 1980's I met a lot of sports celebs and coaches doing video work for a national religious organization. Met Tom Osborn, Tom Landry, Mike Singleterry, bunch of others. Nicest and funniest guy was an NBA referee named Ed Rush. He was a hoot and had a lot of great NBA stories.

I'm a celebrity and everyone in this thread is wrong

Saw Dontari Poe at Wal-Mart last night
Tell him you hope he enjoys his new team next year.

My buddy saw him at the Apple Store last week and had a good, short conversation with him. He said "**** Denver". Your wife is right as long as you don't act like a fanboy.

My daughter met Trent Green when he was on his way from Miami to KC, he must have had to return home before the trade. He was really nice to her, took a picture and signed an autograph. She was in High School, but I think girls can get away with that more than dudes. Anyway, said he was really nice and talked to her and her friend on the plane, then ran into him again at baggage claim and that's where she got the picture. Pretty cool. |

EJ Holub shoed warpaint at the horse boarding ranch I lived next to back in the 60's. I used to shoot the shit with him when was there. He was a part-time blacksmith. (Back when players had off-season jobs)
My mom, back in the day, bowled on the same team with Dave Hill and his wife. I used to go over to Richard Sutcliff's house and shoot baskets. (We used to call him Bitchard Butcliff). I knew Brad Budde when he was a kid although he was just a lot younger than me. I met Tory and Ole' Gus...And the Romper Room chick. :) I could go on but it just gets too stupid. |
Sounds like Poe really gets around town.
|
You should have said hey, acted like you were going to run towards him, then stopped, jumped and tossed a loaf of bread at him, then high fived with him and walked off. But only if he made the catch

Yes! We got a 100-post thread about seeing Dontari Poe buying bread in Walmart. That seems like a notable accomplishment to me.
|
What kind of break was he buying Bitch?
I'm guessing he's a Potato Bread sort of guy. |

Sutcliff was a baseball player - White Sox, I think. Torey, ole Gus and the romper room chick were not Chiefs. |

You may be right, I bet he had a sharpie tucked behind his ear!:D |
Guys like Poe always half expect to be recognized walking around KC, and depending on his mood he may want to interact. If I spoke to him it would be on the topic of his TD pass.
|
It was probably just some black homeless dude and he was like...why the fu******* dis dad bod keep staring at me

If the person is fussing with their kids, or maybe things look tense with their girlfriend/wife etc then yeah... leave them alone, its not about looking to be a brainless dick It all depends on the situation But all things being equal, I'm politely asking for an autograph... and with any luck, the dudes in a good mood and will let me talk football with him for a second |
Nobody will believe this but my wife called me this afternoon after seeing him at Hyvee (95&antioch) buying stamps. Some dude confirmed it to her. I ain't even lying
|
He stretched it out afterwards

Bill Self sat next to me at Henry T's while waiting on a to go order.
He said hi to me, i said hi back, and that was the extent of it. Seemed like he probably would have chatted with me if i wanted to talk. Figured the guy didn't want to get bugged waiting for his dinner. |

Depends on your perception, I suppose, but I don't think it's the same at all. People buy jerseys to represent their team. In doing so, they also financially support their team and the league. Asking a grown man that you don't even know for a picture is some kiddy groupie shit. You're only doing it so you can show it off later and say "hey, I was in this guy's presence once, look!". It's weird. |

But, say you happen across the likes of Tom Hanks jogging while preparing for your wedding in Central Park, and you have a friendly conversation and he's genuinely happy to encounter your blessed day. Who wouldn't want this in their memory book? http://i.vimeocdn.com/video/593898806_1280x720.jpg |

I made this post earlier: Quote:
It would have to be entirely organic. The issue is, I'm not sure the average person can properly gauge a situation while being starstruck so I'd generally shun the behavior. |
to each their own..nothing wrong with getting an auto or pic.
Hell, Berry stayed after the last home game until the last person wanted an auto/pic. ....you guys need to lighten up. |
Quote:
Well if the guy stayed after a game to mingle with fans then it's kind of assumed that he'll be down for taking pics/signing autographs. In that case ask for whatever you want. OP saw Poe out and about. It's completely different. |
Quote:
If for no other reason, posing for a pic can start a procession of looky-loos who might not even have recognized the celebrity until you caused a public scene. Like I said initially, pump chest and nod. . . Walk away. Let him know he's recognized and appreciated, but you respect his space. Celebs will tell you, it's not the pic. It's the 100 pics that follow. |
Reminds me, it can be amazing how much patience some celebs can have.
This dude is clearly an online swag vendor, and Damon doesn't bat an eye or grimace for a second. I'd never have this patience. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bM6-x4JVihQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I once gave Romeo Crennel a tug job at the Gate's BBQ near Arrowhead Stadium.

I've seen more than one celebrity get interrupted while dining out. It's amazing how bold some folks get when they run into a celebrity. Won't ever be a problem for me. :)

Assuming you're talking about kcals, there's no way he's only taking in 1,500 and maintaining that weight. Not even in the offseason. A man that large during the season probably needs closer to 8,000 calories a day. |

I would have commented but not asked for photo/autograph.
You: "Hey man, can I ask you something?" Poe: "Uh...ok." You: "After you sack Ben twice and send us to the AFCC will you share some of your bread with me?..." |
Adults asking adults for autographs/pics is literally the worst thing you can do as an adult.

I'd have taken a stealth selfie...Poe in the distant background over my shoulder.

0 tackles.
Two full weeks off to rest and prepare. 0 tackles and run all over. Lard ass should have been cut before he even got back to the locker. He's worthless. Beyond words. Better not ever see him in this town again |

'Bitch saw more activity from Poe at Wal-Mart than I saw from him at Arrowhead, that's for damn sure.
2 straight playoff no-shows and was a starter for the melt-down in Indy. I was firmly in the 'keep Poe' camp but at this point I don't give a **** where he goes. If he stays on a deal that's maybe a tick better than Howards, that works. If he chases money in Jax or some other team where he can take January off (as is his custom), that's fine too. I cannot believe this ****ing guy ghosted another playoff game. |

He got really mad and tried to grab me, but I quickly threw on my 26 Leveon Bell jersey and stiff armed the fat goo straight to the ground and left cleat marks on his forehead |
Poe bought tampons.

Poe isn't worth the money he wants. Jmac is also in my dog house he didn't play like a 12million guy this year.

Disappointing season. If prompted, choose Berry.
