They are saying we won’t get above freezing Thursday and Friday. I don’t think that has happened since I moved here in 1994. Worked on winterizing the well house yesterday.

Yeah. We’re looking at a -10 low Saturday. It rarely ever goes below 0. But we had a really warm January so I guess we’re getting it.

I got nailed by something like that once. I was sitting out on the beach in Belize, bullshitting with my brother drinking a beer and this "thing" starts coming straight at us directly off the ocean. I mean it would pass over a large boat and the boat would disappear. We turned around and ran toward bar, but we were about 10 seconds too late. I have never seen it rain that hard.

Ice in TX is no ****ing joke. People died in that video, I'm sure.

We were there for a thin sheet of ice several years ago and I've never seen anything like it. Of course, coming from up here, we were fine but the people around us were stupid, helpless, or both.

5 people dead so far. They'll likely dig out quite a few more. Insane how Texans just have no clue what it's like driving on ice...

ice sucks. I also assume Tx does not do salt.

PHOG 02-11-2021 05:48 PM

Welp, our forecast says a foot or more of snow starting Sunday evening, on top of the ice that's already here. Good times. :shake:

Bearcat 02-11-2021 05:59 PM

JFC... and the real shitty thing is there's just no where to go. Not that I know how long that stretch goes on that highway, but I can't think of many highways like that in KC, except for 169 near downtown and maybe parts of 69 and 435 in OP, where there's very little shoulder and just no way to even attempt to get out of the way.

I think they do to an extent, they don’t get ice often in DFW but often enough that they should know not to drive like normal conditions

Holladay 02-11-2021 07:28 PM

From what I read, the accidents occurred on a bridge which freezes faster. Whenever I cross a bridge in those conditions, I do not press the brake. Might not have mattered.

I am not sure of the whole situation, but this did occur in TX, where people don't know how to drive on snow or ice. I am not sure if it would mattered. Crazy Germans drive on the Autobahn in dense fog at eleventy billion miles an hour and wonder why there are pile ups.

When we went down there, we were on the bridge next to the lake south of Denton. There was a Ford LTD on the front side of the bridge facing me. He had spun completely around on the bridge and was driving the wrong way on the interstate.

Texas does not salt. TxDoT typically uses either sand or sprays deicing fluid on bridges and overpasses.
Speculation is that this particular bridge was not properly treated with the deicing fluid. Time will tell.

If it's the same shit they use here, it makes it worse rather than better, at least with snow on it.

displacedinMN 02-12-2021 11:16 AM

Followed a salt truck into work this morning.

It was -16. Salt rarely works and the exhaust water from cars freezes on the highway making it very slick..

I have been in Austin for 20+ years and have always said that I prefer snow to ice if I HAVE to drive in it. Oh, and I don't miss shoveling snow!

But man, when you start spinning and can't get control back like that it is just a helpless feeling. I did that once on an overpass. Spun the wheel but couldn't get control. I was only going maybe 20 MPH. When I knew I had to let it ride out I threw my hands in the air and said "Whelp, that's all." My wife at the time freaked out thinking we were going over the edge. Never even came close That was a long, cold walk home in more ways than one. :)

Bearcat 02-12-2021 06:29 PM

If that -17 with a -30 wind chill happens in KC early next week, I'd really think that's close to a record. :bolt:

I was only going maybe 20 MPH. When I knew I had to let it ride out I threw my hands in the air and said "Whelp, that's all." My wife at the time freaked out thinking we were going over the edge. Never even came close That was a long, cold walk home in more ways than one. :)

Right there with you on preference of snow over ice. We get that 1/4-1/2 “ of black ice on the road first and then the snow covers it up. Makes driving pretty tricky for sure

The last polar vortex we saw come thru a few years back had something like that. I could be misremembering but it doesn't really matter much when it gets to -15 below plus. Just feels like a deep freezer you're walking through.

Nah. I left in 94 and experienced worse than that. It might be a record for the date, but not a record.

zero degrees and I woke up to the sound of a motor running…..ask me how freaking happy I am to have a whole house generator....we had it installed 4 or 5 years ago. We are on Rural Electric coop and they are awesome but time to time shit breaks down. We had a Generac set up to run the whole house and its been needed a couple times. Today at zero it is powering two heat pumps, both running on partial heat strips. Feel bad for those without power for sure

In the grand scheme of things-this can happen.

But colder than Mars.

Interesting way to say you're high on bath salts and shitting in the bushes again.

We've warmed up to 9. But the worst part was I couldn't find my snow shovel and had to go to Walmart. That place was a ****ing madhouse.

I mean really, do you really need nine loaves of bread and 5 gallons of milk?

Plus people were being assholes. That didn't help my normal chipper mood

It was -16. Salt rarely works and the exhaust water from cars freezes on the highway making it very slick..

 Yikes what a difference down here. 76 degrees today. My wife is heading back to Missouri today. Supposed to be 0 or something like that.

TLO 02-13-2021 02:16 PM

This 2 weeks of temps around 0 are bullshit.

Thank you

Agreed. Don't get me wrong because I know everyone has a different situation but ****. I went to the store last week and bought some shit but who the hell needs that much of any perishable item?

Maybe my wife is right and I'm turning into a cranky old bastard
