Man, when healthy (except for Nichushkin, and he was playing great before he got hurt) the Avs are no joke. They're going to be a real problem in the playoffs this year as long as injuries don't derail them.

Both started their regular goalie (even though I think the Wings split between a couple)... Wings pulled their starter earlier in the game and the Leafs pulled their starter at 7-5, IIRC.

I watched the 3rd when I saw it was 7-5... the Wings had two 'throw it on net' tipped goals, followed by a couple of really bad goals (one from below a faceoff dot).


And in other news, I hate back to back games, Avalanche look slow tonight.

For Leafs fans that thought their 3-1 win over the "Wild" on Thursday was boring, this was a disturbing realization that they need help in goal.

Heh... I switched over to Netflix before that, but watched the replay of the 3rd on espn+ earlier. Good to see them grind out a victory.

So.... these Avs over the last 2 weeks have been something else. Really playing well at the moment. I read a stat today that said this is the best record in franchise history after 80 games.

Tonight's game is another crazy comeback to at least tie it up for a chance to win...

Yeah, they haven't lost consecutive games since November 3rd/6th and there are all kinds of great stats on how many times they've scored 5+ goals or even 7+.


Yeah... and I've seen some say the season will be a dismal failure without a Cup, which of course unfair to some extent. The divisional losses have definitely turned up the pressure though to the point where even a WCF loss would be tough to swallow.

Contract-wise, they at least have this season and next before having to resign MacKinnon and replace Erik Johnson (on top of Kadri being a UFA at the end of this season).

Yeah, it was a strange week... looked like the Leafs in a couple games, trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Had all kinds of chances against the Flames and couldn't quite get it done, but had one goal between the Yotes and Canes. :doh!:

It's nice of the scheduling gods to have a west coast swing right after time change though, so the games will be 7:30 here instead of 8:30.

Losing a couple of good prospects and draft picks hurts a bit, but our D is so stacked that it's hard to get TOO upset, especially if you still think Byram can get back to form. (He's skating in a full-contact sweater at practice as of this morning, so there's hope.)

Overall, I'm pleased. Sakic got good value that makes us a much tougher team to play against without giving up the farm.

Avs roster is now built for the playoffs, not just the regular season. I love these moves. :thumb:

Yeah, Sakic is great at plugging holes without overreacting. Cogliano has been around forever. Not familiar with Lehkonen, but he has 13 goals/29 assists.

Picked up some defensive depth whether Byram is back or not, plus the forward depth they needed (hoping Landeskog is back).

Would have loved to pick up Toffoli, but the Flames gave up a lot... and that's just the EA Sports stack-a-roster in me. Nick Leddy would have been fun to watch on this team, but of course don't really need him.

Saw people pining over Jost on reddit (much like we do with Chiefs JAGs), but Sakic's never been afraid to move guys and he hasn't exactly taken the next step.

If this is a goal the above should be a goal, but rendering the decision 40 minutes after the game is inexcusable.

Good Avs game tonight. Heading into OT.

The Avs had the most insane couple power plays tonight, that I've seen in a while. It was a straight up shooting gallery for 2 straight minutes, they had complete control of the zone the entire time, but couldn't get one in the net. Multiple shots off the bar.

Boom, Avs just won the game as I was typing. MacKinnon in OT!

In the CCHA game, the puck went under the goal, so you can say the puck never would have gone into the net if the net didn't move... unlike the Sabres goal.

That's the word I used as well... they didn't score on their last one, but it was still very impressive at how fluid they are, always in the right spot, tape-to-tape passes.

I think that was Kadri in OT who oh so subtly ripped off the Oilers helmet and that guy had to leave the ice right before MacKinnon scored? Uh... oops? :shrug:

Kadri got popped in the nose earlier in the game, and looked kinda pissed off about it, and played hard the rest of the game, especially in OT.

That OT was really impressive too. Avs totally dominated the 3 on 3. Like you said, very fluid and passes were just money. Really fun to watch.

Man... Avs stole one tonight. Oilers were playing incredible defense. Avs bounced multiple shots off the posts. Just couldn't get anything going their way for more than half the game. Somehow got to OT, and put on one of the craziest power play kills I've seen in a while. Then won the shootoff. Great game. Record Avs season continues.

I wondered about Kuemper early in the season, but 49 saves last night and 3rd in the league in save percentage.

Kuemper won't win the Vezina, and he shouldn't. (Shesterkin pretty much has that wrapped up.) But I'm a little surprised that Kuemper hasn't at least been in the conversation. He's had a phenomenal year.

This started as an interesting thread, but then goes to show how out of touch he is with reality. I think he had good intentions (unlike all those crosschecks to the back), but most people are probably aware of the ~40-50% taxes, then he says you need to pay $5k/month to live somewhere and a $75k car (much less investing the money you earn and making more in a few years than most people do in a lifetime...).

Man I had my hopes so high last year. I really thought it would have been a breeze to the cup. This year they look even stronger in every regard. They've made some really good trades to gain every advantage. Trying very hard right now to not get overly excited.....

They're better this year, no question. But we won the President's Trophy last year, and it didn't help in the playoffs. It gets real in a couple weeks. :)

The WC WC race took a turn with Vegas losing 3 of 4, and losing to the Devils the other night... now really needing a win against the Caps tonight.

It would be pretty nostalgic for the Canucks to make it... they were so easy to hate back in the day. I think they won multiple Presidents trophies, but except for one Finals appearance, just wasn't a good playoff team at all. The Avalanche also took the division from them a few times, and once or twice on the last day of the season.


Granted, 20 years later the Avalanche need some playoff success so they don't become the same team.

I saw a video on Vegas' Lehner drama the other day... and how their management has never trusted what they had in their team, even after making the Finals in year one. Then the Fleury drama on top of that, too. I hadn't ever thought of it that way and have mostly hated them because they're the luckiest try-hard Wild-like team ever.... but, seems like everyone has their reasons. LMAO

Preds/Flames was a great game.. Flames tied it with 0.1 seconds left and won it in OT. Stars would now catch the Preds with 2 points tonight.

I read yesterday that Francouz took a puck to the head a couple games ago, and apparently messed him up pretty good. They called up their goalie from their local farm team. Hopefully Kuemper can stay healthy...
