They're putting legit culinary clout behind this thing. I also like their motto to guide all of the work: "Change nothing and improve everything."

That is freaking awesome. I cannot wait to go once they reopen (and the initial crowds settle down a bit - you know it will be PACKED for a while)

In the 80's that place was a LEGIT tourist attraction with the cliff divers and Sopapillas. So much, I knew a guy who had a Jewelry store @ Cinderella city, and opened a second location right next door to Casa's. Made a mint. Alighandhi's Exotic Jewelry

When I first moved to Tulsa, I ate there with a bunch of people from work. I've also been to the one in Colorado but I was really little. I love the atmosphere and all that, but the food was awful. Some of the worst food I've ever had at a restaurant actually.

Sassy Squatch 11-16-2021 06:07 PM

Wasn't there some dumb ass suing to not let them take over? With their insane work ethic and genuine love for the place why would you not want them to go full bore on this?

Eh, kind of. It was a community group that was hoping to purchase it, and they mostly just wanted in on the sale with Trey and Matt. Ultimately, they withdrew the objection.

One of the main things they were upset about was that Trey and Matt weren't Mexicans, so they felt that it was appropriation.

This is the world that the idiotic lunatics in the Outraged Contingent have created. Everything boils down to race, gender, or sexuality.

I thought the entire philosophy was centered around horrible cafeteria burritos with cool ambience.

Had a lot of fun times there as a kid on ski trips, definitely going to take my son there.

I still remember not believing my dad at all when he told me this was a real place.

mr. tegu 06-09-2023 06:47 AM

Looks like this is going to be open to the public soon after a $40 million renovation. Who’s going? Next time I’m out there we definitely will be there.

In reading a bit about it the restaurant didn’t even have ovens as everything was steamed so hopefully the food will be much better now with a fully stocked kitchen. Parker and Stone also don’t seem like the kind of guys that will go cheap and lazy and not serve good food.

Team America hot steaming burrito sounds delicious.

I'll be there as soon as it becomes something less of a madhouse.

Myself as well. It'll be months, at the least. I grew up in Denver and never went there because I kept hearing horror stories of diarrhea. Apparently they'll eventually be open 7 days a week and will have a dining capacity of 1,000.

Once things are settled, we'll be heading over.

Apparently the place is worse than they thought because the May opening time came and went with no word.

I never went but I always heard people describe it as bad frozen dinners.

They hired a famous Mexican-American chef. I forget her name. But she revamped the menu.

Yeah, it was bad. You know the gas stations that have "cheese" and "chili" that come out of a dispenser to put on your hot dogs? I'd describe it as about that level of quality.

It never gave me the shits, but it definitely wasn't that appetizing.

mr. tegu 06-09-2023 08:54 AM

Funny thing about the food for me is that at that time I didn’t really think about food quality (early 20s I think) so that wasn’t really a critique of mine and was instead just thinking the place was neat but I definitely know it did not agree with my stomach.

Definitely something we will check out next time we are in Denver. Not sure we will make the trip just for it, at least until it dies down some.

AdolfOliverBush 06-09-2023 11:44 AM

Hopefully the food won't have the "Brown Note Effect".

wazu 06-09-2023 11:50 AM

Might be good of them to spend a few minutes providing updated expectations on when they will open. Right now there are only two things on the site.

1. The video from last December announcing they will open in May 2023
2. A video announcing they are hiring 500 people for their opening in May of 2023

Sassy Squatch 06-09-2023 11:54 AM

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.9ne...a-d876e6ba473a

Menu seems pretty small. Granted, it kind of had to be if you're actually going to try and serve quality food cafeteria style.

They're keeping it quiet intentionally because they're trying to figure out how to manage going from zero to 1,000 people at a time. They've done some friends and family testing, so in a sense they're "open," and they've said that people on their newsletter list will be the first to get invitations once they move past that.

So yeah, they should update it, but I don't think they have a firm date on when it'll be a free-for-all.

Yeah, you can't do a ton of options or basically any customizations when you're feeding 1,000 people at a time. That's the same as the model has always been there.

Helps when they're each worth around a billion each. Even $40 million is kind of pocket change for them.

I suspect they're basically thinking of it as a fun thing to do. It's hard to imagine they'll ever hit positive ROI on that investment.

I twill be good for the West side, but a helluva drive for people out East and South.

It’ is difficult to determine likely ROI as the number of comparable cafeteria Mexican restaurants featuring cliff divers, unlimited sopapillias, and Black Bart’s cave is somewhat limited.

Nah. We went a few months and had a great time! The wait list is ridiculous, though. It appears to be random rather than sequential. I know people who have been on the list since the beginning and still haven't gotten in.

Interesting

So if you get drawn for tickets can you buy them for any future date?

I'm in town over the 4th of July and while its definitely not the center of my trip I'm meeting my dad who took us there when I was a kid so I thought it would be fun to take him

That is crazy. Had no idea. My son in law knows a guy that works there and they went to the grand opening/soft opening whatever it was called. I really have no interest. They did say the food is much better.

The food is better, but you can do better at a dozen different places nearby. Mostly, it's just a goofy, fun atmosphere. Plan to eat and then stay an hour or two wandering around and having a drink. Their tequila bar is great if that's your thing.
