Lot's of corn, or was that potatoes? I always get Idaho and Iowa confused
|
I want to move back to Iowa after I retire. Okoboji.
|
I’ve only been to Pella once(well twice helped there two days in a row for work). A lot of Dutch and have a yearly tulip festival which is apparently pretty popular. I’d assume the cost of living is a lot lower than where you’re at now, before even factoring in your raise. I commuted from Ankeny Iowa the two days I was there, and it really wasn’t that bad. I probably wouldn’t do it daily, but being that close to Des Moines and it’s suburbs helps make Pella a little more appealing. I personally like Overland Park where I’m at now, but if you’re OK with small town living it would probably be a smart choice.
EDIT- There’s definitely a lot worse and a lot smaller towns in Iowa. And even further from from a “major city” |

Is it heaven? No. It's iowa.

Go ahead and put htismaqe on ignore if you haven't already. He'll talk you into moving even FURTHER south than Wichita by the time he's done. :D

If Nebraska doesn't have enough corn for you, there's always Iowa.

high taxes, good schools, nice roads, good people. Radio will give you grain and hog prices as often as weather. Public Radio has cooking where the women read recipies.
Awesome quality of life |
The beach's in St. Pete are much better.

I love Iowa, and the tax climate is only getting better.
Pella is a nice town, but I'd its also a little cliquey. Living closer to Des Moines would be wise, but I'd be a little picky about where I'd land. The east side of Des Moines is a little lacking IMO, but places like Altoona and Pleasant Hill have some great neighborhoods. I'd find a place in the country if its me. Something close to 163 would be perfect. |
WHO 1040

Jaarsma Bakery - Pella
Ulrich Meat Market - Pella The Big Steer - Altoona Beachwood Lounge - Des Moines (Dive bar) El Bait Shop - Des Moines (Best selection of beer, good food) Mullets - Des Moines (Great sport for breakfast) B&B Grocery - Des Moines (Great sandwiches) Manhatten Deli - Des Moines (Get the Tuesday special any day of the week) Eatery A - Des Moines (best Happy Hour spot) |
Granted it was college but lots of damn fine women

I work there, live in Nebraska.
Lots of windmills on the way to Des Moines from Omaha. It looks like war of the worlds. But, Iowa is the Midwest. Relatively conservative, though it feels almost purple. Good people, good economy. Housing shouldn't kill you. I don't know about taxes. Their gas used to be cheaper than Nebraska by a dime, but now it's the opposite, so I don't know what happened there. For 35%...make the move. It's not like it's some terrible place to live. If you have relatives close by, IMO that's a bonus. Good luck. |
Oh, and their football team is way better than the Huskers...but that ain't sayin much these days...

Fongs is good. Leaning Tower of Pizza used to be good, haven't had it forever so I can't vouch for it now. Wig and Pen is pretty good too. |

Nope Eh Nope Ok Nope Hell no Ok Nope |
So I used to work in Pella about 20 years ago and I can offer a couple of words of advice.
1. Like someone said before, it's a Dutch Reformed community. Be prepared for it, because as they say "if you ain't Dutch, you ain't much". They pray for people who work on Sundays and still have ordinances on the books that don't allow for things like yard work on the Sabbath. 2. I said I worked in Pella but notice I didn't say I lived there. This may not be an issue for you since it seems you're looking at a D level job but average people that work in Pella can't afford to actually live there. I was a senior engineer and couldn't buy a house there, you had to be at least director level to make enough to buy a house there. 3. There's no direct route from most of Des Moines to Pella. If you're planning to do that commute, you want to live on the east side like Altoona or Pleasant Hill and hit 163 to get down there. Depending on where you live in either of those communities, it might be white trash or it might be suburban sprawl. They're not really like the suburbs on the west side. 4. About that commute, it's excruciatingly boring. I did it for about 6 years and at the end of the day, I just couldn't do it anymore. |

I can't give you any advice about Iowa having only driven through it to get to River Falls or Minneapolis. But I can give you some advice about your job offer, I would take it back to your current employer to see if they could match it since the job market is hot right now.

When I lived in Story City, I drove to Union every day. 28 miles, and passed the same 6 cars every day. I was at the doctor in Ames talking to the nurse. We passed each other every day. Being from Iowa, I was used to that. I could not live on the farm any more. I need to be in a city. Altoona to Pella would be ok every day. Especially if remote work is possible. |

I'd live on an Iowa farm right now if Nebraska didn't exist.

And when the hell is Iowa going to raise the 2 lane speed limit to 60 or 65. The time has come. |

If it weren't for state taxes and the weather, it wouldn't be so bad here. |
Live in Des Moines area for the last 8 years, moving from KC; Pella is close-ish -- like 45 minutes away or so. I've never been to Pella, but Des Moines has more to offer than you might think. Granted it's no where near as big as KC/STL of course, so the traffic is light.
Sports wise there is AAA baseball, G League Basketball, AHL hockey and arena league football as well. So there are things sports wise going pretty much year round. There is a good trail system in the area as well. So if you like to hike or ride bikes or anything like that you have a lot of trails that you can use. |

As soon as I make up my mind, I plan on taking the offer to them and seeing if they will match it, but my hopes are not high that they will. I would be making more than my boss if they did that. |

Go up there and stack them checks, then come back home. Loaded. |

That would make the decision for my ass. You get much past the bottom end jobs, everybody is at least paying attention. Nobody is blindly loyal in 2021. Hell I work for myself and periodically I'll run the math on pulling the chute on my operation and working for not Buehler445. |

back when things were better, I was fortunate enough to live a fairly decent life inside the perimeter, here in Atlanta. I had an epic seven year run, I really did.
Not now, I'm way more nerdy than ever before. I haven't dated much and don't crave that city style of life. I'd for certain entertain moving to a town like a Pittsburgh Kansas. Living here tho, you absolutely DO miss the snow, even though it'll spit from time-to-time here, not enough volume nor time prior to melting away. There have been a handful of exceptions since I've lived here (1992) ...& no I've never been to jail except one time in highschool (uninvolved) and Iowa would be cool, actually. |

The strip clubs in Iowa are far better than anything Kansas or Missouri has to offer.
or at least they used to be.... I haven't been up that way in a few years so I guess that could have changed. I helped pay many a college girl tuition back in the day. |
Quote:
That all being said, I've made up my mind. I'm going to call the company in Pella this afternoon and tell them I will accept the offer with a couple of changes. I want one Friday each month off (I will take conference calls and Teams meetings from my truck) and I'm going to ask for an extra week of PTO per year. If they agree to these changes to their offer, I will be moving to Iowa soon. |
