Cavalli throws gas, too - that's no bueno.

Wasn't televised today so I haven't seen anything on it. And by most accounts Cavalli didn't bring anything to the mound with him today so with any luck it was just a breaker that got away or something.

Spring training is worse than 4th quarter preseason football by a mile.

look accidental or retaliation for 29 runs?

Bader signs for two years, $10M, through 2023 season. Don’t see much negative this but open to being wrong.

BigRedChief 04-03-2022 05:12 PM

The 2022 bench and starters are set.

13 positions players on the active roster and, after the eight starters, defined the bench as Albert Pujols, Corey Dickerson, infielder Edmundo Sosa, backup catcher Andrew Knizner, and left-handed hitting outfielder Lars Nootbaar.

Yeah once they got Pujols which young player they were going to keep on the roster went out the window.

Couple of pitchers for the last spot or two. Not much roster intrigues there either.

I mean they’ll PAD it. It looks fine - lots of OFs have cuts like that.

Man, that is going to massacre right handed power. Avoid Ryan Mountcastle in your fantasy drafts gents. Probably won’t help Hays and will cost Mullins some oppo power as well.

So they announced Hicks as the 5th starter today. Wasn't really expecting that so soon but ok.

I'm strangely okay with this.

Hicks just didn't have the breaking stuff to finish batters off. And frankly, at 103 mph, they couldn't put the damn ball in play either. So guys just shortened their swing and fought pitches off until he spun them a cement mixer or walked them. He really was in a rough spot in relief.

So he needed to make his breaker MORE nasty or his fastball LESS nasty so they can at least put the ball in play and let the defense get outs.

So make him a starter and have him throwing 97-98 with the same spin rates. He'll still have that nasty downward sink and plenty of armside run. Maybe it will put a little more depth on his breaking pitches and perhaps he can develop a better true off-speed pitch like a changeup or curveball (both of which require much more feel than a grip and rip slider).

I do have some concern over his height. Shorter pitchers that come from 3/4 w/ a short-arm delivery have trouble driving a ball down in the strike zone. To get the ball there, the pitch has to come out of their hand low and stay low. Whereas a tall pitcher with an overhand delivery can have it start high and dive through the zone.

So the consequence of being a shorter pitcher that works down in the zone is going to be that hitters are going to take pitches that you and I look at and ask "how the hell did they lay off of that?" Because in order to get it there, it started low and they knew to spit on it as soon as it left his hand.

Lord, give that kid a curveball and he'd be unhittable though. Then he'd be able to work UP as well because they'd have to respect the possibility that it's a curve and can dive. You give him fastball/curve at 97 with that kind of run - he'd be a shutout waiting to happen every start. He could challenge every quadrant of the zone that way.

As it stands, I think if I'm a hitter I treat him like a knuckle baller. "If it's low, let it go - if it's high, let it fly" and after awhile he'll have to abandon the top of the zone to become something of a supercharged Jason Marquis.

Or maybe just a rich man's Dakota Hudson at that point.

In either event, it's a worthwhile experiment. It's either him or that Bond Villain they signed out of Japan, VerHagen.

Interesting stuff, thanks for the info.

The way this team goes Flaherty could be out until the All Star break.

So is it closer by committee?

Nah - it'll be Gallegos.

Oh sure, Marmol may make some noise about BPBC by the moment he puts his dick on the table and it gets sliced off when Genesis Cabrera walks 2 guys and Aaron Brooks gives up a bomb in the 9th, he'll be done with that.

New managers will lose the clubhouse in a hurry if they keep giving up games in the 9th. Tell the players "well it was that or lose it in the 7th" all you want - they don't buy it, they don't care.

Afterall, these guys are all type A personalities. You tell them 'well we'd have just given up those 3 in the 7th' and they'll internally think "sure, and then we'd have scored 2 in the 8th...dick"

Marmol isn't going to run a closer committee. He'll settle on Gallegos unless Gallegos spits the bit. And if he does, all bets are off.

BigRedChief 04-07-2022 11:20 AM

I know Pujols and Molina have said this is their final year. Has Waino said anything like that?

BigRedChief 04-07-2022 12:33 PM

Man, Keith Law is down on the Cardinals. 3rd place with a losing record. 80-82.

I might be too pessimistic on the Cardinals, but right now this team doesn’t look that healthy, and I worry they’re going to futz around too long with the nostalgia show of Albert Pujols, who hasn’t been worth 0.5 WAR in any season since 2016. They’re not going to get much production at all from the middle infield, their best starter is injured, and their best hitter from last year, Tyler O’Neill, is highly likely to regress for multiple reasons, not the least is his extreme willingness to chase out of the zone.

Marco Polo 04-07-2022 01:39 PM

That very well could happen but I am still optimistic they’ll be between 85-90 wins.

Yadi was shot last year - giving him a raise was just completely insane. He's the worst everyday starter by a fair amount. He's a $10 million replacement level player at this point.

Pujols got an inside fastball at 94 mph and couldn't even drive it to the warning track. Previous Pujols gets his hands inside that and puts that into Big Mac land. Current Pujols whacks it off the trademark for an easy fly out.

You're gonna see that all season from RH pitching. They're just going to go away for show and then come inside to get him out. Rinse, repeat. You can't send that guy out there against RH starters. He's a .600 OPS waiting to happen.

Still irritates me that we're going to stunt Yepez's development so we can roll this dude out there to tip his cap and sell tickets. Just a pure turnstile analysis there.

As soon as I saw Tavares play, my ceiling for him plummeted.

Looooong swing that needed to be completely rebuilt to succeed at the MLB level, sub-par athleticism and no baseball savvy to speak of.

Honestly I feel like Jorge Soler would’ve been about a best case scenario for him. I was floored by how far he had to go when he got the call.

Jewish Rabbi 04-10-2022 11:39 AM

Wasn’t he compared to Gregory Polanco as both were coming up around the same time? Probably would have had a similar career.

'Hamas' Jenkins 04-10-2022 01:12 PM

Essentially no hyped Cardinals prospect has lived up to expectations in years.

Aside from three great October starts, Wacha was a disappointment.
Taveras goes without saying
Martinez was a headcase that met about 35% of his potential
Rasmus: See Martinez
Brett Wallace: Thank God they traded him for Holliday
Alex Reyes: Total bust

We'll see how Gorman, Carlson, Walker, and Liberatore end up, but it's hard to be too optimistic given recent history.

BigRedChief 04-10-2022 01:13 PM

Saw a pre-game clip. They were talking about Goldy and Arenado have used the same bat their whole career. This season they switched to a bat that’s an ounce heavier and a inch longer in attempt to create more power.

Called it a hockey puck bat. Supposedly feels the same as their previous bat.

Martinez, Rasmussen, Reyes we’re all head cases. Great raw talent but their mental toughness was/is for shit.

Do baseball front offices do the psychological evaluations on draft picks like the NFL? They obviously whiffed on those psyc eval’s.

Tavernas decision making and maturity can happen to any athlete. Players get DWI’s all the time.

Wallace was a win. Can’t fault the team for that trade.

Rasmus same thing. That trade got us another World Championship. Another rare win for the team..

Wacha got injured and was never the same.

Dewitt and his tightwad wallet that cost us big time difference makers were/are
Luis Robert
Titius Jr.

They supposedly wanted to sign with the Cardinals and obviously have been worth the signing bonus. I’m sure there are many more that they cheapskate’d their way out of a deal for a productive player.

1979 Brock was the best I was hoping for (as a comparison). Semi-regular, kept him fairly fresh, knew it was his last year and ended on a positive.

I just hope they keep to the role of facing lefties. That I think is the key to his best numbers. He is just hammering them right now.

He looked like a lot of players on the cusp. He was pressing, but I didn't think he looked over matched.

He needs to play, whether it is at the AAA level much longer will be interesting to see. If he comes up he needs to at least play 3-4 times a week. He is going to have an adjustment period. Pujols was an anomaly. Young hitters, particularly those with pop, need to play regularly enough to learn from their mistakes.

Marco Polo 04-20-2022 11:09 AM

Just thrilled to see Pujols end on a high note. Agree that it’s a marathon of a season so we should keep this approach all year.

For any clock experts, at what point can we bring Gorman up with the whole service/contract stuff? Would be great for him to carve out a role at 2B/DH and slide Edman over to SS

First time he has went first to home since 2019. Fastest time since 2018.

He did look like he was too tired to slide and said **** it, the throw won’t be online. The dugout scene with the players was fantastic. I thought it was cool too.

There is no way he’s hitting >.280 with a 900 OPS this year. There will be some ugly stretches. But right now, it’s some nostalgic fun.

He always says he wants to stay. But, don’t all say that? Not that I think he’s not being truthful. I’m sure he’s being honest. Seems happy.

At this rate, he gets an MVP, the hometown Dodgers, his childhood team comes at him with the Brinks truck, he can leave.

I'd be bummed but I'd get over it.

Ultimately all these opt-outs have made baseball incredibly transient. Or if it isn't, it's because a player is underperforming.

Guys get these opt-outs after a year or two and if they play well, they exercise them. If they play poorly, they don't and you're stuck paying them more than they're worth for 5 years.

There's next to zero upside on the FA market now that all these guys are signing deals with early opt-out provisions. Instead you need to get your home-grown talent to sign early and hope they continue to ascend. Someone like Flaherty never showed any interest in that - maybe someone like O'Neill would.

Otherwise is senseless to get too attached to any of these guys. Well, except for Bryce Harper, who specifically noted that he would not be asking for opt-outs when he signed in a down market. And we didn't get involved because...reasons.

Primarily because Mo can't evaluate talent. He basically paid Goldy for years 31-36 what he could have paid Harper for the same years.

We had a backlog of up and coming corner people who would likely need to end up at first base, but a shallow pool of outfield talent. The Phillies stole him for that price.

Maybe I’m alone in this but I really really hope pujols reconsiders retirement. He has a perfect niche right now for a smart manager who uses him for the right matchups. He will have a place for a few years while teams scramble for DHs. I still think the rbi record is very very within reach for him.

But most of all I would love to see what late career damage he can do once they eliminate the shift. It just feels like the last hope for anyone to break bonds’ HR record which is such an eyesore for mlb records charts

Is it only me? but it seems like when they win the first two games of a 3 games series, they phone in their offense for game 3?

Dude, it's only April. If he hasn't fallen off a cliff by July, we can revisit this.

Yep, its coming out all rainbows right now.

It will get ugly at some point. Hopefully, not for long stretches. I don't want to see Pujols weakly grounding into a double play for months.

The offense is struggling, if they lose to the ****ing Royals this week these douches I work with won't shut up for a goddamn month.

Chief Roundup 05-01-2022 07:21 AM

Dude the Royals are 7-12 while we are 11-9. I know it is early but the Royals are just not a good organization, which sucks for the guys here. Playing us is like their WS though so we will get their best. They will probably get some ump help too.

We are 11-9, but the offense has really stalled.

Arenado's start covered up a lot for this team early on.

We have way too many players hitting .200 or less. You're not going to be successful with this many players starting and win games.

Molina
Dickerson
Carlson
Dejong
Sosa
O'Neil
Donovan

No idea if Edman can be an average or close SS but this isn't a slump with DeJong, It's been going on for over a year. From what I read, Gorman is playing at least an average 2B.

Gorman is tearing it up. With the new agreement, is that Super 2 still in effect? Is that the delay? Is that why they are not calling up Gorman. I think this weak hitting lineup could use through 18 games......338 BA/11 HR/16 RBI/1.201 OPS

I am so tired of Yadier Molina and Paul Dejong. Neither of these guys are starting level players. I don't care what Molina has meant to the franchise at this point. Knizner needs to be our everyday starting catcher. Yadi can start Kniz's days off.

We were worried about Pujols taking up space in the lineup. :doh!:

I dont think many, if any, of these 10 year mega contracts came with opt outs. It's all these tier 2 deals that are ending at like age 33-34 that are getting opt outs. Basically if you pony up the money, there's no grounds for the player to ask for an opt out because no one is getting them in the mega deals.

Edit: Just checked and Stanton is the only one that got an opt out. I'm not really including Arenado because to me he fits in that tier 2 in that he got 8 years sub 300 and would have ended at age 35 without the extra year tagged on by the Cardinals.

Cole got an opt out as well, but his can be voided by the Yankees if he exercised it by adding another year onto the deal.

Given what Bryant got this offseason, which was insane, and if Arenado continues on a MVP pace, he'd be stupid not to opt out. He'll have $144M left. I can't see a scenario in which he got less on the market, especially when he would easily be the best player in it.

yeah that’s what I was worried about. Finally get a top player in the lineup again and he’s going to get the MVP and opt out. Go home to the Dodgers and get his bank vault full of cash.

He stays with the Cardinals, he makes $200 million in his career. That’s pretty damn good. But he goes to the Dodgers? Maybe he gets another $100 million?

Maybe he gets another $100M from the Cardinals? It's not like the Cardinals cant afford to pay him.

There's a long road between here and there but previous history tells us the Cardinals won't make him the same type of offer some of the other big money clubs will. As long as Mo can say he tried, the ownership is good.

Yes, but there's a difference between cant and wont.

Who wasn't also worried about DeJong and Molina?

At least the team doesn't seem inclined to give Molina 130 starts this year, so that's progress.

I've never seen anybody with a better feel for the market than Mozeliak.

He always knows EXACTLY how much to offer to come in 2nd place and tell the fans he made an effort.

Marco Polo 05-08-2022 08:19 AM

Yepez is off to a hot start. Eventually pitchers will figure him out but love to see another live bat

Yepez can hit.

Like I said - team should’ve just put him at DH and let it fly. This Dickerson/Pujols thing is just embarrassing.
